By itself “resign” does not tell us very much. It is only when we place it in the context of a broader situation that its meaning comes in to focus. Further, while the connotation of resign is often negative, resignation is in many cases the best – and wisest – alternative available to us.
It often takes more courage to STOP doing something than it does to CONTINUE doing something. And that is where the wisdom of resigning comes in to play. All too often, we resign ourselves TO the situation we face in spite of knowing that we need to remove ourselves from the situation. All too often we hesitate to resign FROM the situation to pursue those more important things in life.
Why? Well there are thousands of reasons and not nearly time enough today to go in to a detailed discussion on the why. However, I would offer that the main reason we fail to step away from that which we know is bad for our physical, mental, or spiritual health is simply that it is more convenient to avoid change.
There are things we need to stop doing. We all know that. Things that we need to resign FROM doing so that we can START doing those things really make a difference. We all know that. The challenge is that the day-to-day momentum makes avoiding the situation all too easy. I am not sure about you, but for me I often regret what I did NOT do a lot more than what I did do. As I’ve shared before courtesy of Jim Rohn, “We must all live with one of two pains. The pain of discipline or the pain of regret”.
With the above in mind, my question to you is as follows:
- What activity in your life should you resign from so that you might be able to spend more time focusing on those activities that are more important to you?
I hope that you have a great week as you prepare for the forthcoming Holiday season.
As always, thanks for sharing a bit of your time with me.
NOTE – I would be remiss if I did not offer a special thank you to Jeff Griffin, the senior pastor at the Compass Church in Naperville. Jeff provided the motivation for today’s message. I’m extremely grateful for all that he shares on a weekly basis.
