Colombia: a social protection education programme for young people

At the request of GESTAR SALUD, the Colombian federation of mutual health societies and member of AMA (Alianza del Mutualismo de América) and the AIM (International Association of Mutual Benefit Societies, an Education and Solidarity Network founding organisation), a series of meetings took place between 24 and 26 November in Bogotá to discuss a social protection education programme and, in a wider sense, the mobilisation of solidarity stakeholders with a view to improving social protection in Colombia and Latin America.
EVENTS

World Universal Health Coverage Day will take place on 12 December 2014.

On 12 December 2012, the UN officially endorsed the principle of universal health coverage. Each subsequent 12 December has provided an opportunity to highlight progress made and put questions to decision-makers.

As advocates of the mutual society model, which is by definition solidarity-based and universalist, we are proud to support a global initiative involving more than 350 organisations to promote healthcare for all!

NEWS FROM OUR MEMBERS
Dubrovnik, CROATIA: During its Extraordinary General Meeting, AIM has announced its collaboration with the Education and Solidarity Network on an informal health and social protection education project in Colombia.
Ouagadougou, BURKINA FASO: Our mutual society project has been put on hold due to new circumstances prompted by the current political crisis in Burkina Faso.Originally scheduled for 30 October 2014, voting on the universal health insurance act in Burkina Faso (RAMU-BF) had been postponed to 6 November and replaced on the agenda by a draft amendment to the constitution.  This draft led to the dissolution of the National Assembly and government as well as a change of president. The universal health coverage act has now been indefinitely postponed. We have nevertheless continued our efforts as we and our partners firmly believe that this type of project is essential for the country and its citizens.

CALL TO PARTICIPATION

The Network is launching an innovative action research initiative, which will enable our members to pool their experience and share good practice and critical success factors, thus allowing people to learn from one another.

We offer teaching and research staff the opportunity to carry out action research on a project of their choice. The project must be run either by ESN members or civil society organisations connected to the education sector (trade unions, mutual societies, non-profit organisations, cooperatives). The project must relate to one of the three following themes:

  1. Promoting pupil and teacher health in schools
  2. Developing solidarity-based, universal, quality social protection
  3. Encouraging young people's involvement in solidarity-based, public-spirited organisations

In this way, we will gradually develop an international network of teaching and research staff who are involved in these issues.
