Panto Preparations!

"A Christmas Carol - The Panto" opens Friday, December 12th!

What evokes Christmas more than Tiny Tim’s, “God bless us every one!” or Scrooge’s, “Bah, humbug!"? Why, a traditional rollicking panto, of course! And how better to enjoy the holidays than by putting them together in “A Christmas Carol – The Panto"? This production combines the classic Dickens tale (narrated by Dickens himself!) with the hilarious antics of an old-fashioned panto: villains, heroes, a dame, slapstick, corny jokes, singalongs (“You’re a Mean One, Mr. Scrooge”), and more. There’s even a live band! Gerald Schieven will be directing this production, with music direction by Sasha Moriarty-Schieven, and choreography by Melanie Ehrlich.

Description
Middle-aged and married, overworked and overweight, Barney Cashman wants to join the sexual revolution before it's too late and arranges three seductions: the first, Elaine Navazio proves to be a foul-mouthed bundle of neuroses; Bobbi Michele is next, a 20-ish actress who's too kooky by half; finally comes September and Jeanette Fisher, a gloomy, depressed housewife who happens to be married to Barney's best friend.

"Mr. Simon has created a great character here...it is extraordinarily funny and yet also charming...as witty as ever, perhaps wittier." - The New York Times

"Delightfully hilarious and witty, as well as filled with wisdom about human nature...an uproariously funny author. But he is far more than that. He has a mellow and compassionate understanding of how weak and essentially well meaning mankind behaves...a genuinely brilliant play." - New York Post

Listen to the "In The Theatre" Podcast

We've recently discovered a Podcast that focuses on Theatre in British Columbia!  It's a show created and hosted by Peter Wienold.

The aim of “In The Theatre” is simple: to inspire, encourage and inform readers and podcast listeners about community theatre. We want to tell the stories of Community Theatre, focussing mainly on clubs and individuals in British Columbia, Canada.

In The Theatre” is an independent project developed and operated by Peter Wienold. You might call the podcast the “unofficial” Theatre BC podcast. The vast majority of our content will be about Theatre BC people, clubs and events. Occasionally we’ll feature non-Theatre BC content, but we’ll always focus on our main goals to Inspire, Encourage and Inform our Community Theatre audience.

About Peter Wienold:

My first contact with local theatre productions was the Alberni Valley Musical Theatre in the late 70′s, when I joined the orchestra on clarinet for their annual productions each November. Eventually I took to the stage, joining the chorus. A few small roles culminated in a production of “My Fair Lady”, when I had the honour to play Freddy Eynsford-Hill. For AVMT, I directed productions of “The Pajama Game” and “Annie Get Your Gun” in the mid-80′s, and served some time as the group’s President.

I first became involved with Portal Players Dramatic Society (Port Alberni) in 1986, performing in a production of “Move Over, Mrs. Markham” at the North Island College Playhouse. In 2004, I directed a new production of that same play, at The Capitol Theatre.

Since then, I have directed, produced and acted in numerous productions, including both directing and acting in “Noises Off” in 2010 and “Greater Tuna” in 2012. I have directed many other plays, including “Rumours” and “The Dinner Party” by Neil Simon; “Self Help” by Norm Foster; and “Nurse Jane Goes To Hawaii” by Allan Stratton.

I was honoured to receive the Best Sound Design Award at the 2010 North Island Zone Drama Festival in Qualicum for “The Glass Menagerie”. And, for that event, I have chaired the local organizing committee when Portal Players hosted Festival in 2006, 2009 and 2011. Also in 2011, I adjudicated the Vancouver Island One Act Play Festival in Qualicum.

I have served on the Portal Players board of directors since 2003, including a long stretch as President. In 2008, I was elected to the Theatre BC Executive Committee, and have continued to serve there since.

For details on how your club’s production can be featured on an “Extra!” edition of the In The Theatre podcast, e-mail inthetheatrepodcast@gmail.com
