Summitt Family Night
Summitt Family Night will be at Panda Express (2501 W. Parmer Lane - at the Mopac/Parmer HEB shopping center) on Thursday, Dec. 11 from 5-8 p.m. A portion of the sales will go to Summitt PTA. A flyer was placed in your Monday Folder. You must bring the flyer to Panda Express in order for Summitt to receive credit. We are not allowed to pass it out at the restaurant. If you do not have it, you can print this flyer.
Jingle Bell Jog on Friday
On Friday, December 12, we will have our 7th annual Jingle Bell Jog for 4th and 5th graders! They will race a 1-mile course around our school grounds! We are currently building up endurance by running/jogging the Jingle Bell Jog route during PE class. Here are the times they will be running:
5th grade - 8:35-9:20 am
4th grade - 9:20-10:05 am
Teacher workroom volunteers
The teacher workroom needs more volunteers. The teachers need help making copies, laminating and various other jobs. If you have some spare time during the week to help out our hardworking teachers, please contact nicoleerin@outlook.com to see how you can get involved.
Food Drive
Summitt's annual food drive will be held next week, Dec. 8-12. Please send non-perishable food items to your child's homeroom teacher. Food items can be sent in unopened cans, bags, and pouches. The most-needed items include tuna, beans, and vegetables, but any donations will be readily accepted. The homeroom with the most food items will win a cookie celebration!
More Library News
Due to the great response, I am posting some volunteer work that can be done at home. Contact denise.richey@austinisd.org for more information.
Old Books to be Weeded - Volunteer will pick up a box of books that need to be stamped and have all identifying marks removed. Mrs. Richey will explain. No deadline.
New Books to be processed - Volunteer will pick up a box of books that need to be stamped and receive Summitt identification. Turnaround 2 -3 weeks.
Signage - Volunteer will pick up a sample sign and materials needed to make additional signage for the library-- 2 E-Books signs, 1 Fiction, 3-4 Non-Fiction. No deadline. -OR- Volunteer will use Dewey Decimal Classification system to create decade signage for most popular areas in the non-fiction area. No deadline.
In Library Help:
Mondays and Fridays are usually big turn-in days. If you have 30 minutes or an hour to spare, please consider stopping by the library to help manage the circulation of books for our almost 800 students.
Do you know how to mend books? Cover books in protective sheeting? Use an Avery spine label template to create templates? Please consider donating your time and experience to the library. We have many well-loved books that could use a little TLC.
Hour of Code
Please consider joining your child for an exciting technology event in the Computer Lab at Summitt during the month of December. We live in a world surrounded by technology. And we know that whatever field our students choose to go into as adults, their ability to succeed will increasingly hinge on understanding how technology works. But only a tiny fraction of us are learning computer science, and fewer students are studying it than a decade ago.
That’s why Summitt Elementary is joining in the largest learning event in history: The Hour of Code. Last year, 50 million students tried computer science in one week. This year, we're joining students worldwide to reach 100 million students! Check with your child’s teacher to find out when their class will be coming to the Computer Lab in December. All Kinder – 5th grade students will attend this event.

No Place for Hate activity
Students are invited to participate in an art project where they Visualize a World Without Hate. The art will be displayed beginning January 19, 2015, on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, to launch No Name Calling Week, a No Place For Hate activity. Read to Succeed
Fourth & 5th Graders can earn free tickets to Six Flags Fiesta Texas by reading over the holiday break. Only 6 hours of non-required (not for teacher-assigned reading logs) reading before January 9, 2015, earns a ticket! Have your child pick up a reading log from Mrs. Richey in the Library or their language arts teacher for details.
Coke Rewards codes
Please remember Summitt after your family gatherings! Those numbers you see in the caps and boxes of Coca Cola products can be turned into items the school can use. Donations of points found in Coke, Sprite, Fanta PowerAde, Nestea, Minute Maid and more through the My Coke Rewards Program have already earned gator balls, a stereo, a flip camera, and other stuff for the school. The more codes we get the more useful the items we can order! If you have caps/codes but don’t have enough points to bother with an account, contact Kynna Sullivan at kynna@outlook.com and she will arrange to have the points donated to Summitt.
