Unraveling the Complexity of Eukaryotic Cilia and Flagella. Cilia are central players in the lives of cells, exhibiting sensory as well as motile functions. Recent findings have revealed that they are important to many signaling processes and play a host of other roles in the body. Such discoveries have made cilia a high priority among researchers. This issue of BioScience includes a Special Section on cilia and flagella.

Migrations without Borders: Going, going… gone? Earth's migratory species face a growing array of challenges in the face of climate change, resource overexploitation, and rapidly changing landscapes. Can international pacts save migrations by protecting large swaths of land and the animals that use them?

Cilia and Diseases. Growing interest in cilia, which are finger-like organelles that extend from the bodies of individual cells, has revealed their role in a number of human ailments. As a result of cilia’s presence in a wide variety of cells, defects in them cause diverse human diseases that warrant further study. This article is a part of a Special Section on cilia and flagella.

The Shape of Ecosystem Management to Come: Anticipating Risks and Fostering Resilience. Ecosystems support human well-being in a variety of ways; they provide the fuel, food, and other resources that people need to survive. Global change poses growing threats to ecosystems, and new management approaches are needed to increase their resiliency to a variety of perturbations.
