Safety is my choice - October 2014

End-of-year holidays are close, but the year isn't over yet...

It’s coming to that time of the year where jobs, big and small, are coming to a close for the end-of-year shutdown and as such, are under the pump to meet deadlines and get as much done as possible before the big break. With the holidays well within sight and with the pressure to meet deadlines on the job, we can easily lose sight and our focus on how to do a job safely.

The end-of-year break is the perfect time for us all to put our feet up and get some well needed rest and relaxation after a full year’s hard work. Whether it is a holiday away from home or spending time at home with our friends, family or loved ones, we want you to be able to enjoy your break to its full potential.

This means to finish off the year without any incidents, accidents or injuries.  With the holidays so close we can taste it, it can be easy for our minds to wander from the job at hand and how to do it safely and onto our grand plans for our break. This could be all it takes! A simple lapse in concentration and focus on safe work practises and an incident can occur that blows all plans with friends, family and loved ones up in smoke.

Remember to always stay focused on safety and the safety of others while on the job and DO NOT substitute your safety, or the safety of others, to finish a job quicker. We want you to leave for your break with a full bill of health and we want you to return that way. Remember, it takes longer to heal than to do a job safely!!

Hot Days

With summer here we can expect to have some hot days ahead of us. It is important to maintain hydrated through these hot days with plenty of water as on hot days, dehydration and exhaustion are a potential cause of injury or harm. Becoming only mildly dehydrated can seriously impact your body’s ability to function and have serious negative impact on things like your concentration, reaction time and judgment. Always keep well hydrated and have a drink bottle with you on days of high temperatures.

SAFE AT WORK Australia recommends breaks in heat, each hour, as follows:

Importance of notification of Incidents, Accidents and Near Misses

ACCIDENT — is an undesired event or sequence of events causing injury, ill-health or property damage.
NEAR MISS — near misses describe incidents where, given a slight shift in time or distance, injury, ill-health or damage easily could have occurred, but didn’t this round.
INCIDENT — an incident is an unplanned, undesired event that hinders completion of a task and may cause injury or other damage.

One of the best ways to avoid further accidents is to understand how an accident occurred and how to avoid that type of accident in the future. The accident investigation is a tool. The goal is not to lay blame.

The goal in an accident investigation is to:
  • Satisfy legal requirements
  • Find out what happened and determine immediate and underlying or root causes.
  • Rethink the safety hazard.
  • Introduce ways to prevent a re-occurrence
  • Establish training needs.
An accident, a near miss and an incident should all be investigated.
  • Accident investigations are a tool for uncovering hazards that either were missed earlier or require new controls (policies, procedures or personal protective equipment).
  • Near-miss reporting and investigation identify and control safety or health hazards before they cause a more serious incident.
  • Incident investigations should focus on prevention.
