Analyzing Urban History

Recently, CURA has worked with the Engaging Columbus project in collaboration with Ohio Wesleyan University faculty member, John Krygier, to improve the geocoding of historical photographs.

The map showcases a collection of historic panoramic images from a 1922 master's thesis by Forest Ira Blanchard (featured below). Using historic real estate maps and local knowledge, CURA is assisting the content curators in relocating a number of historic photos.

We hope to continue working with the collection and encourage others interested in Columbus' urban history to get involved! Contact CURA with questions.

CURA Graduate Student Paper to be Published

Ying Song, a Ph.D. student of Professor Harvey Miller (Dept. of Geography) will have her work published in International Journal of Geographical Information Science, as well as Geographical Analysis. The research looks at mobility within transportation networks, using network-time prisms (NTPs) to delimit accessible locations with respect to time given scheduling constraints, movement constraints and speed limits.

In addition, Ying has accepted a tenure-track assistant professorship at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. We are excited for her bright future and wish her all the best!

UPCOMING EVENT:

Visiting Scholar to Deliver Lecture on Friday, Jan. 16

All are welcome to attend the Geography Department Colloqium event on Friday, Jan. 16 at 3:30pm in Room 1080 in Derby Hall. Professor Vonu (Piyushimita) Thakuriah Professor, School of Social & Political Sciences, Univ. of Glasgow.

Data-Driven Public Transportation and Operations

  • This presentation will consider the opportunities and challenges to public transport arising out of increasing availability of open data and location-based services in cities.
  • Such initiatives have the potential to foster a data-driven approach to planning and service delivery. Recent programs relating to data and technology in transit systems were implemented against a backdrop of changing societal preferences, economic circumstances and an increasingly strong role played by entrepreneurs providing digital city services.
