LEEWAY APPLAUDS THE 2014 TRANSFORMATION AWARDEES!
The Leeway Foundation recently awarded $135,000 to nine women and trans* artists from the Philadelphia region. The 2014 Transformation Award recipients are a diverse group working in disciplines including performance, folk arts and media.

A national panel of artists and cultural producers convened in two stages to review applications and work samples. The 2014 panel consisted of: writer, editor and activist fayemi shakur; feminist and activist poet Lorna Dee Cervantes; performance artist and arts educator S.T. Shimi; media artist and documentarian Seyi Adebanjo; and media artist and previous Transformation Award recipient Yowei Shaw (LTA ’13, ACG ’13, ’12, ’11, ’10, ’09). Cultural strategist Sage Crump, facilitated the second stage panel.
TAX WORKSHOP FOR ARTISTS
Whether you’re getting grants, selling or performing art, self employed or have an LLC, you still have to file taxes. But what are the best filing options for your situation? With over 25 years experience working with artists and small businesses, Christianne Kapps will offer advice, handouts and help explain some of the more confusing tax subjects for artists. 

Session 1: Tuesday, January 20 from 5:00pm - 7:00pm
Session 2: Tuesday, January 27 from 12:30pm - 2:30pm

2015 APPLICATIONS NOW AVAILABLE
Applications are now available for the 2015 Art and Change Grant and the 2015 Leeway Transformation Award. 

The Art and Change Grant (ACG) provides project-based grants of up to $2,500 to women and trans* artists and cultural producers living in the Delaware Valley. Deadlines: March 1 and August 1

The Leeway Transformation Award (LTA) celebrates women and trans* artists and cultural producers living in the Delaware Valley who create art for social change and have done so for the past five years or more, demonstrating a long-term commitment to art for social change work. The LTA is a $15,000 unrestricted award (not project-based) open to women and trans* people working in traditional and non-traditional art forms. Deadline: May 15 (Stage 1)

GRANT INFORMATION SESSIONS
Join us for our first information sessions of the year to learn more about Leeway, our grants, and application processes. 

At each session, past recipients will share their experiences, and Leeway staff members will provide tips and best practices on how to prepare your application.

APPLICANT SUPPORT SESSION IN WEST PHILADELPHIA
Applying for a 2015 Leeway grant or award? Sit one-on-one with Leeway staff at an open applicant support session to get help or feedback on your grant application. This drop-in session does not require an appointment; applicants will be seen on a first-come first-served basis. Monday, February 9 from 2:00pm to 7:00pm at the Philadelphia Folklore Project (735 S. 50th Street).

OPPORTUNITIES
2015 Creative Access Residency Program announced a four-week residency for visual artists and writers living with spinal cord injury. The fellowship includes the cost of the residency, a travel stipend for the awardee and an additional stipend for an accompanying caregiver, if needed. Deadline: January 15
The Center for Emerging Visual Artists (CFEVA) presents How to Make the Most of Your Online Identity: A guide for artists and businesses on January 15. Learn how to use social media to establish credibility, attract audiences, and make social media work for you. Presented by Patrick Baynes, co-founder of PeopleLinx. This workshop is free, but you must register. 
COMMUNITY NEWS
Artist U presents Building a Sustainable Life as an Artist, a two part workshop about increasing sustainability, productivity, and financial security in your life as an artist on January 23 and January 24. The workshop is free, but you must register and be available both dates.
The Transgender Oral History Project (TOHP) presents We Live, an Interactive exhibition opening January 23 at Scribe Video Center. Participants will be able to watch a short documentary, contribute to a community timeline or even submit their own stories to the TOHP collection. 
Scribe Video Center presents Rebel directed by María Agui Carter. This amazing story of Loreta Janeta Velazquez, a Confederate soldier turned Union Spy, is one of the Civil War's most gripping forgotten narratives. The film screens on January 27 at the International House.

Aja Beech (ACG '10) reports on curator A.M. Weaver's (LTA '09) multi-media event Ceremonies of Dark Men for The Huffington Post. The event took place in December and ushered in "a moment in time, poised as an opportunity to celebrate, revel and reflect on the lives of black men in new contexts." Read More. 
Betty Leacraft (ACG '14, LTA '11, ACG '09, WOO '99), and Leeway board member Rasheedah Phillips were selected to participate in the new Neighborhood Time Exchange: West Philadelphia Artist Residency. The residency, in it's inaugural year, trades an hour of studio space for an hour of volunteering in service of communities in West Philadelphia along with a stipend and supplies. Read More.
Jen Blazina (WOO '04) is showing work at Projects Gallery's Square Foot exhibit in Miami. One hundred artists were given a 12" x 12" section of wall space to show multimedia work. The show runs until January 10. Read More. 
Mary DeWitt (LTA '10, ACG '09, WOO '03, '01) is featured in The Bigger Picture, a group exhibition at the Arts Council of Princeton. The opening reception is January 17. Read More.
Takeya Trayer's (LTA '12, ACG '12, ACG '10) new book My Mommy is My Daddy is now available. This book "is a fun opportunity to discuss the variations of families, parenting, and gender." Read More.
