Teacher feedback: "I am so excited by the Edupeg programme because, when I do language and maths, it makes the lesson so interesting. The learners feel free to discuss their ideas and understanding which makes it easier for me, as a teacher, to identify those learners who don’t understand the topic."

Farewell Liz Swersky – Edupeg’s Founder
After twenty dedicated years with the Edupeg project, Liz Swersky, the Project Director and founder will be leaving the Edupeg Project at the end of 2014. Liz is the amazing inspiration behind the Edupeg materials and she has worked with dedication and passion to leave an indelible footprint on education in our country. Through Liz’s work, children who are sorely in need of a better education have had a taste of the joy of learning and glimpsed a better future for themselves. Her legacy is awesome and she will be greatly missed by us all! For more details on her remarkable legacy, read here.
Spelling Competition - Uitenhage, Port Elizabeth
In collaboration with Volkswagen South Africa, The Wild Rapid Spur and Nashua, Edupeg undertook a Spelling Competition in Uitenhage in the schools in which we work. This was met with great excitement. 17 schools participated in the spelling competition, a massive 9204 tests were written and administered and approximately 5000 children participated. Each child received a certificate of participation. The prize for the competition was a sponsored meal at The Wild Rapid Spur in Uitenhage for the winner and a friend. Each winner received an English Sentence Dictionary and a winner’s certificate. Read the report here.
From L to R: A proud teacher and learner, a few of the happy winners, winners certificates and dictionary.
World Design Capital Project - Litha Primary School sustainable food garden AND wall mural
Since embarking on this World Design Capital Project of installing a sustainable food garden at Litha Primary School in Gugulethu, there has been much progress and we’re happy to report that the garden has been installed and has produced some vegetables! Mongisi, who was a volunteer at the school has been identified as the Garden Champion, which will ensure the sustainability of the garden. This initiative has created an employment opportunity for Mongisi!
DisChem Foundation also came on board and generously donated R80 000 towards this initiative. Thank you DisChem Foundation!!! Click here to watch their video. Click here for the launch photo album.
We were fortunate to benefit further from being a World Design Capital Project as it enabled us to collaborate with a fellow WDC project. The talented See-Saw-Do is a South African social enterprise organisation that is passionate about transforming spaces where children develop and learn, and together with RADO’s team-building event, a wall at the school was magically transformed. Welcome
We extend a warm welcome to Taryn Casey. Taryn has been working at Edupeg for the last 6 months as a Project Manager and will be taking over from Liz in 2015. Taryn has over eight years’ experience in the development sector in South Africa, and five years teaching experience.
Most recently, Taryn worked for the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation to expand educational opportunities for disadvantaged learners by funding high quality education projects with measurable impact. Taryn is passionate about the plight of disadvantaged learners and worked closely with the organizations she supported to achieve the best possible results and change the landscape of educational opportunities for these learners.

We are also delighted to formally welcome three trainers to the team: Emmanuel Nkeshimana who is situated at Litha Primary School in Gugulethu, Cape Town. Emmanuel hails from Burundi and has more than 10 years teaching experience; Musomuhle Mazibuko who is situated in our very rural schools in Isandlwana, KwaZulu-Natal. She is Edupeg’s youngest trainer and the glee on the children’s faces when she enters their classroom is already evident. Emmanuel and Musomuhle joined our team in July; Penny Burgess who is situated in the Eastern Cape. Penny is the newest member of the Edupeg team and will commence her work in the Intermediate Phase in schools in 2015. Penny has over 38 years’ experience of teaching in primary schools with a strong focus on Mathematics. We welcome them all in joining our journey on educational recovery.

Good-bye…
We bid a fond farewell to one of our Gauteng trainers, Jen Ryder. Jen has been part of the Edupeg team since 2009 and will be missed by us all. We wish her well and success in her future endeavours.

We also bid farewell to our Eastern Cape Trainer, Sabina Langson. Although Sabina has only been with the project a short time, she had a great impact on the schools she worked with.
Thank you
The staff at Edupeg extend a heartfelt thanks to each and every person, company and organisation who has helped us on our road to education recovery this year and thank you for your support and involvement. We look forward to hearing from you in 2015.

We wish all of you a wonderful holiday season. Keep well and stay safe.
Principal feedback:  "A fantastic opportunity for the school, but more for the learners involved. Learners interact well and enjoy using the peg board. Learners are encouraged to participate. Edupeg is a good resource, the practical interaction with learners gives both educator and learners an excitement for lessons. There is an educational buzz when learners are busy with Edupeg. The facilitators gave demonstrations on how to use the resource, which is very educational and based on CAPS. The facilitators are very professional and freely share ideas."   Mr. R. C. Blignaut – Machiu Primary School

Our office closes on 15 December 2014 and reopens on 12 January 2015.
