Holiness, Godliness, Usefulness

Lesson 544: Peter's Sword

At the start of His ministry, Jesus refused Satan’s 2nd temptation. But Satan dragged out the same old trick again at the end of Jesus’ ministry. Peter wanted to kill anyone who tried to arrest Jesus.

Peter drew his sword and cut off the ear of the high priest’s servant. John 18:10 Peter’s goal that night was not God’s will – not really.

John 18:11 Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword into its sheath; shall I not drink the cup that the Father has given me?”

Jesus could have called on God the Father to send 12 legions of angels. Matt.26:53 But instead, Jesus chose to do the will of His Father.

The sad thing is that immediately before Peter drew his sword, Jesus proved that He is God.

John 18:4-6 [When the soldiers came to arrest Jesus, He asked] “Whom do you seek?” They answered him, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus said to them, “I am he.”… they drew back and fell to the ground.

Why would armed soldiers fall backwards when Jesus identified Himself? Because the actual words of Jesus were “I AM”. Jesus used the same words as in Exo.3:14, when God identified Himself to Moses.

About This Series

The goal of this series is to become more useful in serving the Lord Jesus Christ, as an instrument in the Redeemer's hand. The theme verses for the series are Ephesians 4:22-24, Philemon 11, 2 Timothy 2:21

- to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds,
- and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.
- Formerly he was useless to you, but now he is indeed useful to you and to me.
- Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from what is dishonorable, he will be a vessel for honorable use, set apart as holy, useful to the master of the house, ready for every good work
