Ten Early Bird Projects Awarded on the 1st Call
The ten Early Bird Projects that aim to support the emergence of new high-impact initiatives as part of the CMU Portugal Program, funded by FCT, were recently announced. João Claro and José M.F. Moura, directors of the Program in Portugal and at CMU, respectively, are very pleased with the strong engagement of the community, which submitted: “a total of 38 proposals that, according with the international evaluation panel, were all high quality projects.” more

Portuguese Undergraduates Awarded with a Scholarship to do Research at CMU
The CMU Portugal Program recently announced the name of the 11 Portuguese candidates accepted to its Undergraduate Internships Program (UIP). Launched less than a year ago, this initiative raises to 17 the number of Portuguese undergraduates that have the opportunity to benefit from an intensive eight to twelve weeks of research experiences at CMU. more
 
Veniam Raises $4.9 Million Series A Funding to Accelerate Deployment of Connected Vehicles and Cities

Veniam'Works is led by two Portuguese entrepreneurs João Barros (UP) and Susana Sargento (UA). “Building on the fantastic success we’ve had in Porto, Portugal, this funding will allow us to expand rapidly in the U.S. with significant momentum,” said João Barros, CEO and founder of Veniam, who is the former national director of the CMU Portugal Program and faculty member at Faculdade de Engenharia of Universidade do Porto. more
 
José M. F. Moura Named Fellow of National Academy of Inventors
The director of the CMU Portugal Program at CMU has been named a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI), a high professional distinction accorded to academic inventors who have demonstrated a prolific spirit of innovation in creating or facilitating outstanding inventions that have made a tangible impact on quality of life, economic development, and the welfare of society. more

Orientation Day in Portugal:
Bringing Together Ph.D. Students and Alumni
On October 25, 2014, more than 30 students and alumni of the CMU Portugal Program participated on the annual Orientation Day in Lisbon, Portugal. The goal was to welcome newly enrolled students and the students arriving in Portugal for the first time. more

Dual Degree Professional Master Students Present Capstone Projects in Madeira
On December 18, 2014, the Madeira ITI will hold the final presentation of the capstone projects carried out by the dual degree master students with different organisations, namely Madeira Civil Protection, OutSystems, and WoW! Systems. more

Congratulations to our four dual degree Ph.D. candidates, who successfully defended their dissertations between September and November, 2014:
  • in Electrical and Computer Engineering:
    • Augusto Santos (IST-UL and CMU) with “Bi-virus Epidemics over Large-scale Networks: Emergent Dynamics and Qualitative Analysis.
    • Vikram Gupta (FEUP and CMU) with "On the Optimization of Multiple Applications for Sensor Networks."
  • in Engineering and Public Policy:
    • Moinul Zaber (IST-UL and CMU) with "The influence of Institutional Structure on the Regulatory Choices and the Impact of These Choices on Telecommunication Marketplace in Transition."
  • in Technological Change and Entrepreneurship:
    • Leid Zejnilovic (IST-UL, CLSBE and CMU) with "Essays in User Innovation."

Faculty Exchange Members Comment on their Experience


Ricardo Lopes Pereira (IST-UL/INESC ID), Vera Miguéis (FEUP), and Pedro Furtado (UC), have different experiences to tell us about their stay at CMU, in the scope of the Faculty Exchange Program. Ricardo describes it as "From Classic Lectures to Student-Driven Classes," Vera Miguéis as "A First Step Towards Strong and Continuous Cooperation," and Pedro Furtado as a way to see how it is possible to "Bridge Academia and Industry." Albert Linde, Mariana Oliveira, Tiago Cardoso, and Salomé Azevedo, were the first young Portuguese researchers of the Undergraduate Internships Program that went to CMU to experience an entirely different culture and to participate in state-of-the-art projects. After their return, they see it as a valuable cultural and social experience that they will remember forever. more
