Latest News: Central Riverfront Task Force and Community Advisory Committee

The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board invites public comment on the Draft Central Mississippi Riverfront Regional Park (proposed renaming to St. Anthony Falls Regional Park) Master Plan through January 18, 2015.
Major components of the draft include:

• Creating better places to walk and bike
• Better connections within the neighborhood grid
• Making crossings safter
• Connecting Main Street to East River Road/UMN
• Restoring the East Falls
• Increase accessibility to the tailraces
• Including a visitors’ center and restroom
• Reorganize the east end at Stone Arch Bridge
• Instilling the notion that we do not want a motorway between Main Street and East River Road, it should only accommodate bike and pedestrians
• Expanding the park boundaries to the East River Gorge

Once approved, the master plan will guide park investment along both sides of the Mississippi River near St. Anthony Falls for years to come. The draft plan is the result of a 16 month process that included 12 meetings of a Community Advisory Committee, 10 meetings of a Technical Advisory Committee, three community open houses, an online survey, and one-on-one conversations with residents.  Based on comments received from the public, the draft plan will be revised and presented to the Board of Commissioners for a public hearing and approval in early 2015.

OUR RIVERFRONT & PUBLIC SPACES

Help Guide the City of Minneapolis' Downtown Public Realm Framework & the MPRB's Downtown Service Area Plan

Over the next five years, the MPRB is embarking on an ambitious and critical effort to prepare master plans for all five service areas of Minneapolis (South, Downtown, Southwest, North, and Northeast). The Downtown and South master plans are the first to be initiated. The Downtown Service Area Master Plan will guide system-wide capital improvements, management, and operations of the existing public parks in the center of the city, and will envision and identify new park and recreation opportunities.

As part of this process, MPRB staff and consultants are also meeting regularly with City of Minneapolis Planning staff who are concurrently creating the Downtown Public Realm Framework, a guiding policy document for enhancing the pedestrian experience in downtown Minneapolis. The MPRB’s plan will focus on the downtown park system’s existing parks and trails, while the City’s will focus on the urban network of streets, urban plazas and spaces. It is envisioned that the documents will be related but separate, and each will be approved through our respective elected bodies.

Rehabbing the 10th Avenue Bridge?

Over According to an article in the Southeast Journal, the city of Minneapolis' Public Works department is seeking $42 million for the purposes of addressing issues on the 10th Avenue bridge, a major gateway into the Marcy-Holmes neighborhood.

Please see the article
HERE; we will post any additional information as the city of Minneapolis budget process continues to unfold.

This past June was not only Minnesota’s wettest June, but Minnesota’s wettest month on record. The amount and intensity of the rainfall led not only to wide-spread flooding, but created ideal conditions for landslides and/or slope failures. A slope failure, characterized as a failure of rock, sediment and vegetation, occurs whenever gravitational forces overcome the resisting forces holding up a hillside, bank, or bluff. While soil saturation from rainfall events can be a triggering factor of many slope failures, the geology of the slope is also of prime importance, as well as understanding how human alterations to the landscape affect slope stability. Join us as Carrie Jennings, a geologist with the Minnesota DNR, discusses a preliminary inventory of slope failures in the Twin Cities metropolitan area and along the Minnesota River corridor from Jordan to St. Peter, with an emphasis on looking at the underlying geology of those slopes and what may have triggered failure.

Upcoming Conferences with Restorative Justice Community Action

Restorative justice works to reduce repeat offenders, reduce crime overall and strengthen and build community. Through the community conferencing process, community members get to know their neighbors and join in performing community service: neighborhood block patrol, clean-up event, etc. Each offender meets face-to-face with community members, admits responsibility and learns first-hand how their actions have affected others. Community members have a direct role in the justice process—a chance to tell the offender exactly how they feel and to have input in the deciding outcomes.

Neighborhood volunteers are needed. Attend a conference to see how it works.

SIGN UP for a conference, or call 612.746.0780.
