SEASON'S GREETINGS FROM CHOBHAM RUGBY

The short days and long nights are bringing us closer to Christmas and Chobham Rugby has been as busy as ever. We've played great rugby across every age group and our members have participated in a wide range of activities and community events. The 1st XV have delivered strong performances and our Girls, Seniors, Juniors, Minis and Touch players have made us proud demonstrating rugby's core values at every level of the game. As ever, our wonderful team of volunteers make it all happen and we are appreciative of all of our valued sponsors. Go Mighty Chobham!

RFU ACCREDITATION

Chobham Rugby was proud to be presented with our Accreditation certificates from the RFU at the Club House on Saturday 23rd November.
ENGLAND'S STEVE ROBSHAW AND NEIL PARSLEY VISIT CHOBHAM

Thanks to Chobham member Cadell Rowe and arranged by Lucozade, the Chobham 1st XV were offered a fantastic opportunity this week to be coached by Neil Parsley, England strength and conditioning coach with a very special guest in the shape of England captain Chris Robshaw.

The Chobham lads were put through their paces by Neil for a full hour and a half with a similar session to those that the England squad are faced with at Pennyhill Park when in camp. The England men were visibly impressed by both the skill level and the fitness of the Chobham players and everyone involved clearly enjoyed every moment of the experience.

Chobham Head Coach Ryan Gregory said, “ It was fantastic to work with two men at the very top of their fields and the presence of both Chris and Neil has definitely helped to build the buzz and energy that already existed within this very tight knit group of players ahead of the second half of the season. Everyone at Chobham RFC would like to offer a hugely sincere thank you to both Chris and Neil individually, as well as to Lucozade for the experience.”

CHOBHAM MINIS AT HARLEQUINS v SALES SHARKS

The Minis took a 300 strong army to watch Harlequins V Sale Sharks as part of Quins community programme. This is a trip we haven’t done for a couple of years but we are keen to rebuild our association with our local premiership club. As part of the entertainment Chobham provided 116 minis for the guard of honour, in fact so many that they had to be split over the two halves of the game. Minis Chairman Ian Woodley said, “The Chobham Minis were the highlight of the evening, did us proud!”

One of the benefits of the trip is that Quins operate a cash back scheme for its community clubs and as a result of the numbers the club earned £1244 in the process. As for the game itself …..well the best thing was the guard of honour, Quins going down 16-12. Look out for a couple of the Quins boys joining us at training early in the New Year they may pick up some tips from the Mighty Chobham!

RYAN GREGORY CHOBHAM CENTURION

We congratulate Ryan Gregory who earned his 100th Chobham 1st XV cap and as a result joins the exclusive Chobham Centurion Club. Ryan joins an illustrious band of both current and former players to achieve this tremendous milestone and is the first player for five seasons to hit the century mark reflecting the intensity of the modern game.

FEEDBACK ON THE FIRE AT CHOBHAM

Many of you will have noticed that the Portacabin changing rooms were damaged by a fire a few weeks ago. This has caused disruption to some of our fixtures and they are currently out of use. However, the good news is that Facilities Manager Mike Riley has already agreed costs with Loss Adjusters and work is underway on repairs. The refurbished changing rooms and showers will be back in use and ready for games on the weekend of 3/4th January 2015.
MIGHTY MIGHTY CHOBHAM ALE

Chobham are proud to announce the launch of the long awaited 'Mighty Mighty Chobham Ale'. The brainchild of Steve Edwards and brewed by SixPenny Brewery in Dorset, it is a beer fit for champions.

The Mighty Mighty Chobham Ale has received rave reviews in October's Issue of
Ale Pundits
"One thought went through my mind after that first sip was ….. “THIS STUFF IS GOOD, GIVE ME SOME MORE”. It was genuinely a fantastic pint that has everything. The citrus kick, mixed in with the slight bitterness mixes pleasantly with the taste buds."

TOUCH RUGBY UPDATE......HERE COME THE GIRLS!

There was a great turnout for the inaugural Ladies Touch Rugby session held on 12th November. This is a new addition to the Touch Rugby programme at Chobham Rugby – sessions are held every Wednesday evening at 7:30pm. There is no physical tackling, line outs, scrums or kicking involved but the combination of skill, fitness and the social aspect makes Touch a great game for women interested in keeping fit and who love rugby.

Everybody is welcome to play touch rugby, even if you’ve never played rugby before. Girls contact rugby teams also train every Wednesday night, so come along and join us for 'Womens Only Wednesdays" at Chobham. If you want to get to play a bit of rugby, get fit or just get away from the sofa in front of the TV then give Touch Rugby a try!

WE NEED YOUR MEMORIES AND MEMORABILIA

During October 1968 I played my first game for Chobham. During 2006, I played my last.

Chobham was my saviour. A 16 year old, fresh from his mother’s “apron strings” suddenly had to grow up and adapt to what was a very hostile Surrey compared to his West Wales village. The members of the club were fantastic. They looked after me, encouraged me and made my move to a foreign environment, bearable. A number of the players lived in similar circumstances to myself, low wages, living away from home etc. but there was always the weekend to look forward to and the camaraderie that goes hand in hand with rugby.

I’m pleased to say that I’ve seen some remarkable changes to the club and its premises over the years. Gone are the days of the two showerheads shared between 30+ players, the cold hut that we called a clubhouse, heated by a paraffin space heater that could have launched a plane into the sky. The current building and pitches are a far cry from the early days, and the membership has grown from a few to what it is today. What hasn’t changed, are the cor
e values of that original fledgling club, which install a sense of value and belonging to young and old alike.

As we approach our 50th anniversary, which is only 18 months away, it would be good to hear from some of the members who were around during the early years of the 60’s, 70’s and early 80’s. Others and myself are trying to put together some historical information with regard to the early years of the club. We have very few pictures or memorabilia from those years, so look through your old photo’s and collections and contact me with regard to anything that may be of interest. If you have any facts or anecdotes, jot them down and please
email them to me. It would be great to be able to fill in some of the historical gaps of such a fantastic club!
