Just How Long Can People Live?
There’s an oddly persistent myth that people have always had a good chance of living to a ripe old age if they could just survive childhood. Socrates was old, after all, and what about Ben Franklin? It’s true that infants and children were once more likely to die than people of any other ages. Eliminating many of the deadly diseases of childhood gave the biggest boost to our average life expectancy as it doubled in the past 150 years. But children aren't the only ones who are less likely to die than they were in the past. At every age, even older than 100, people are more likely to survive the next year than they were at any other time in human history.

Aging Revolution Must Benefit Us All

Scientists attending the 64th annual scientific meeting of the British Society for Research on Aging responded to George Monbiot's article “The Elixir of Life – In a Poisoned Chalice?” covered in the July 12, 2014 Longevity Reporter.

These scientists highlight the following:
1) Aging is a global problem. It ruins the quality of life of older people in both rich and poor countries and is misleading the world’s poor to believe that only the rich grow old.
2) Interventions that extend healthy lifespan will be relatively cheap. For example, a compound potentially efficacious in treating mild cognitive impairment is currently available on the NHS for about £10 a day. Read more
Why Do Two White Americans Get The Ebola Serum While Hundreds Of Africans Die?

Bioethicist Art Kaplan explains why the first doses of ZMapp, the ebola fighting drug that has only been tested on primates, was given to Dr. Kent Brantly and Nancy Writebol. Considering these two Americans were serving in volunteer positions in ebola-infected regions in West Africa Kaplan explains why this was the best decision to make given the logistical, legal, and ethical issues involved.

This tragic situation may be seminal for the future dissemination of fresh, novel biotechnology. New laws may help expedite cutting-edge drugs and therapies without being viewed with fear and distrust. Read more

Liz Parrish of BioTrove podcasts interviews Joe Betts-LaCroix, a Silicon Valley entrepreneur and Executive Director of Health Extension. In this interview Joe describes the strategic mission of the Health Extension community. He emphasizes the fundamental challenge that therapies cannot be approved to treat aging since the U.S. FDA does not currently consider aging as a disease. As as result, companies are discouraged  to translate aging research into practice, and thus work in this area is underfunded. How do we change this? Listen to the entire interview

Does Daily Aspirin Use Reduce Cancer Risk?

Taking aspirin every day could cut your risk of developing cancer, report BBC News and The Daily Telegraph among other news outlets. People aged between 50 and 65 who take aspirin every day for ten years could cut their risk of bowel cancer by 30% and cancers of the throat and stomach by 25%, according to the study published in the Annals of Oncology.

The National Health Service in the UK highlights that, although the findings on aspirin and cancer show promise, it is not clear that the results are reliable from the methods reportedly used to compile this review. Additionally, aspirin can cause major side effects such as peptic ulcers and bleeding from the stomach, particularly in older people. Read more
