Immigrants share stories of success as part of speaker series

Source: Mississauga News - www.mississauga.com/community-story/4726509-immigrants-share-stories-of-success-as-part-of-speaker-series/

A pair of Canadian immigrants who have enjoyed a great deal of success since arriving in their adopted country will be the featured speakers next month at the Central Library.

Senator Salma Ataullahjan and Mississauga’s Sukhjit Singh will be sharing their lives and stories with the audience as part of the Canadian Success Stories Speaker Series event on August 26 in the Noel Ryan Auditorium.

Singh, who last year was honored with a RBC Top 25 Canadian Immigrant Award, has been in Canada for less than a decade but has worked extremely hard to reach his goals. He’s an active volunteer who sits on community boards for a number of organizations including Interfaith Council of Peel, Volunteer MBC and the Peel Newcomer Strategy Group.

He’s been featured by the CBC and received a Newcomer Volunteer Gem Award from Volunteer MBC.

Meanwhile, Ataullahjan is the first Pakistani-Canadian to be appointed a senator in Canada. She has served as an executive with the Pakistani Canadian Professionals and Academics organizations and as president and vice-president with the Canadian Pashtun Cultural Association.

In addition, she serves as an executive with the South Asian Regional Council and the Citizens Foundations’ Toronto chapter.

The event runs from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Admission is free but registration is required. To register, call 905-615-3200 ext. 3589 or email library.info@mississauga.ca.

Voluntourism: a win-win?

Written by: Linda Bui, student at University of Toronto studying International Development

Voluntourism/noun /: form of tourism in which travellers participate in volunteer work, generally for a charity.

Voluntourists’ destinations are often in the Global South.* Sightseeing and helping others is good, right? Yes, for the individual who is doing the direct travelling, it can be a life altering experience.

You may have heard the stories of students spending summers teaching English or building houses thousands of kilometres away from home. They’ve seen poverty first hand and want to make a difference. They are now global citizens.

But consider: 1. Does the travelling individual understand the socio-political and cultural contexts of the local community? 2. Have they considered their “position” as an outsider? 3. Is it sensible to spend thousands of dollars on a flight oversees for an “experience?”

Volunteer Spotlight:
Bill Judges

My name is Bill Judges and I am a Volunteer Ambassador for Volunteer MBC.

When I retired approximately 2 years ago I felt I would have to find ways to fill the time that I had spent working in sales and marketing over the last 35 years. I knew I needed a reason(s) to get up in the morning and was concerned about the possible damage (both physical and mental) that prolonged inactivity might cause me. Volunteering seemed like a logical step. After a short period of time, spent mostly on the Volunteer MBC website, I decided that the position of Volunteer Ambassador would allow me to capitalize on my sales and marketing background.

A good part of my time as Volunteer Ambassador is now spent visiting schools and talking to students about the benefits of volunteering in general and doing it specifically using Volunteer MBC. It had been many years since I had been inside a school so I was a little nervous. I had visions of gangs of young punks walking the halls and beating up people like me (I had started watching a lot of television). Further, I didn’t get along very well with many of the teachers. I had trouble dealing with authority in those days.

My actual experience has been totally different. With few exceptions, the kids are great.  I love talking with them. The teachers are different too. They now tell me their problems. I feel both empathetic with them and concerned about them.

I have two new interests that I am now very interested in (Volunteering and Education in Ontario). So far, I am physically healthy and as strong mentally as I have ever been. I am not bored and am optimistic about the future being in the hands of the next generation. For me, volunteering has been a very positive and fulfilling experience.
