From Turf to Tools

Exploring material resources, land and craft in a cross-discipline collaboration

On Friday 22 and Saturday 23 August SSW presents Slow Prototype From Turf to Tools, an ongoing investigation into our relationship with land, material resources, and craft, focusing on the unique process of bloomery iron smelting. The open forum OUTING concludes the two-week intensive experimental smelting process being undertaken by artist Eden Jolly and master blacksmith Darrell Markewitz.

On Friday 22 August the project participants will present and share their work, research and related practices, and on Saturday 23 August there will be a public demonstration of the bloomery iron furnace. Please note that volunteers for manning the bellows for the furnace on Saturday are extremely welcome!

This event is for anyone with an interest in craft and skill, as well as the connections we have with materials, land and resources. Bloomery iron smelting is an ancient process that has been largely lost to the modern world. It is radically different to modern metals and relatively unknown to contemporary artists and artisans. This open forum is a place to ask questions and initiate new dialogues about contemporary notions of dwelling, sustainability and making.
