Happy Sunday!

How was your week? I've been settling into my new apartment and cooking up a storm. During dinner one night, I was reminded of the the connection between food and memory. I was a little too tired and hungry when I was devising the night's meal, and the only thing that would come to mind were recipes that I hadn't seen or tasted for years. The flavors of my childhood and the meals my mother used to serve were all I could think of. Those recipes and flavor combinations were imprinted on my brain. And the dinner, because it was steeped in so many memories, tasted glorious. (FYI - I made a fresh tomato sauce with zucchini and chickpeas, as well as a vinegar-rich salad with cucumbers and peaches).

It is beautiful how a bite of a dish can send us 20 years in the past, yolking us to where we came from, and still be fresh and new. Each time we experience a dish, it is slightly different, and we add another bead to a string of memories all about a particular meal or dish. Though places and objects and smells all have this power to transport us to the past, there is something about food - which nourishes our mind, body, and soul - that makes it particularly potent in this regard. What dishes come up in your life again and again? I'd love to hear.

Have a great week and thanks for reading!

Wellness is more than just physical: Be a boss of the bulk bins: Dining alfresco:
  • These photos from National Geographic of outdoor diners are awesome.
And a recipe for your outdoor meal:
  • Grilled veggies with basil miso. Grilling is one of the simplest and most satisfying ways to enjoy vegetables, but this miso dressing adds some flair to make it an extra special dish.
Moving more at work: Stricter gluten-free labeling standards:
  • I was surprised to learn how lax the gluten-free labeling laws were before this! Three cheers to the FDA for stepping in and regulating the labels. As they mention in the NPR piece, the old standards may have been fine for people with gluten sensitivities, but the old laws were not sufficient to keep celiac patients healthy!
A little indulgence for dessert:

Simple Pleasures
I was sent some lovely Ethiopia Guji coffee this week from Joe. My unexpected delivery became a prime opportunity to pause my Monday afternoon, enjoy a coffee that's been harvested, processed, and roasted with care, and to feel gratitude for all of the forces that had come together to ultimately bring this coffee to my doorstep.
