Coppa Italia - F.I.S.E.

The Tides won the VII ° edition of Coppa Italia FISE 2014.
At the Argentario Polo Club was held the VII ° edition of Italian Cup, with the participation of 14 teams, including eight foreign, and organized in collaboration with the Italian Federation of Equestrian Sports. After two weeks of tough competition to complete the qualifying stage, two of the foreigners teams, Bardon from Hungary and Then Tides from Poland achieved the goal of reaching the final. Despite the very good performance of Bardon team throughout the tournament, simply in the final The Tides it was superior. A game played at high speed, which seemed twice the level that actually had the tournament. The home team Argentario achieving the third place defeating Villa Sesta, and La Cantera clearly won the subsidiary cup.

Dedication

As the Sotogrande season makes its way steadily to the finals, the distance from anywhere in Europe to the south of Spain fades slowly from the horsebox drivers minds’. Anyone who has driven down there knows how long a distance it is. Notwithstanding the sheer quantity and quality  of the polo (33 teams in all), getting to any tournament takes dedication. Polo has always been a sport that requires dedication and time. Whilst time seems to have become a rather rarer commodity these days, modern communications, flights and motorway have helped even time stressed players to make their way even more quickly to their destinations.
With this in mind, some Australian players demonstrated the sort of dedication of getting to the match on time that few do today. In 1929 the Ashton family decided to come to England with the goal of winning the Hurlingham Championship Cup.  They hired a small ship “Port Huon”, made loose boxes and shoed the ponys with matting set off one January morning for a 2 month trip with three of the players aboard. (The 4th took a liner a little later.) It took 48 days to cover the 13’000 odd miles, but after storms and much seasickness for man and horse alike, they finally arrived safe and sound in England. The family team managed to get to the final but whilst they did not win, King Alfonso XIII of Spain was so impressed by the dedication the team had shown he awarded another trophy to them.

Next time a team has difficulties getting to the match on time, this might be a tale worth recalling. Whilst King Alphonso’s spirit will definitely be at the prize giving ceremony in Sotogrande, perhaps King Filippe VI might remember his great-grandfather if he is present, and the dedication common to all players at whatsoever level.
