Memorial Walk and Vigil planned for Rebecca Scollard, 8/13 9:30am

Rebecca Scollard was killed crossing James Street on Thursday, July 31. Seattle Neighborhood Greenways has organized a memorial for her, to be followed by a community debrief with City representatives who have the power to make our streets safer and prevent future deaths.

The Memorial Walk for Rebecca Scollard will begin at 9:30 am on Wednesday, August 13 with a gathering in front of St. James Cathedral on 9th Avenue. We will carry signs and walk quietly to the site of Rebecca's death at 9th and James, where we will hear a few words from people who knew and cared for Rebecca. Singer/songwriter Jim Page will offer a song or two.

After the Memorial Walk, we will move to a nearby location to debrief and discuss ways that safety for people who walk, bike and use transit can be improved along James Street.

Art Interruptions installed throughout First Hill in August

Ten emerging artists have created temporary art installations throughout the First Hill neighborhood for the project Art Interruptions 2014. The artworks will inhabit city sidewalks and parks and offer passers-by a brief interruption in their day, eliciting a moment of surprise, beauty, contemplation or humor. Each artist will develop artworks on display for approximately ten weeks beginning in August.

PARK(ing) Day application deadline approaching

PARK(ing) Day happens once a year, on the third Friday in September, and is an opportunity for any Seattleite to temporarily turn parking spaces into parks. The event raises awareness about important issues like creating a walkable, livable, healthy city and helps people re-think how our streets can be used.

Last year, Seattle boasted 45 pop-up parks around the city, each offering a fun and unique way to engage with the local community. The deadline for PARK(ing) Day applications is Friday, August 29, and instructions for submitting are here.
