Listening to Our Communities

This past summer has been filled with opportunities to listen to our communities. In fact, we believe that one of the key things in creating change is to listen and hear what issues communities are identifying! We feel so fortunate to have great community members, volunteers, staff and interns that help us truly engage communities. Check out some of the awesome stuff we have been up to this past month! 


Chinatown Intercept Survey volunteers along with APIOPA intern Lyna Truong

Traffic Safety Research in Chinatown!

In the past week, APIOPA was able to collect 59 intercept surveys from pedestrians in Chinatown about their perceptions of traffic safety. While the surveying process continues, the results so far seem to confirm what state traffic accident records indicate -- Chinatown vehicle traffic makes for an unsafe walking environment. Read More



A Few Steps Closer to a Healthier HiFi

On June 21st, 2014, APIOPA officially launched the 2014 Bike to Japan program which is an epic 6,000 mile adventure through the streets and bike paths of Los Angeles County.  It is a program geared towards engaging 15 college youth to not only get more physically active but also explore how space is used in their local community and ways to advocate for a voice in how their neighborhood should/could look.

As the program is coming to a close, with the very last marathon ride coming up on Saturday, August 23rd, we’d like to share some of the places we’ve been as well as some of the topics we’ve been challenge the youth participants to think about. Read More
