Koigu Journal

August 2014 Our first issue!

August will be over soon. Some people see this as an end. End of summer, end of freedom.
At Koigu Wool Designs we'd like to view it as a happy beginning.
A new season. A new school year. A new chance to create colorful, exciting projects in beautiful wools.

So we're introducing this Koigu Journal, which we'll send out once a month. In it will be a new pattern, hints and tips about choosing colors, ideas and suggestions for variations on the project and whatever fun, interesting, colorful bits we come up with!
This month's pattern is for a shapely but fairly simple garter stitch scarf.
It uses four pairs of bright magic marker Kersti colors, plus one for the edge.
You can find more of these colors in Kersti Landra's Highlighter Pullover, which can be found in Koigu Magazine 6, just out now!
It changes direction, picks up stitches and only binds off at the very end!
The style is reminiscent of the bold, clean, fun style of early sixties fashion, so we're calling it the Super Mod Scarf.
The sample is worked using two different colors for each section. You'll want them to have enough contrast not to blend into each other.
You could also work with just two or three colors, as in the first alternate color photo. It's best with this simple color choice to have each color share something (purple and pink here) but also enough variation so they don't get lost.
But what about taking a deep breath and using a bunch of colors? Take a breath and play with combinations! Look for a bit of unity (as in the second alternate color photo of several stippled dyelots), like brightness, or one repeated bit of color. But maybe add in one or two odd, unexpected choices.
Perhaps you'd rather go for a theme: strident marker colors, as in the sample, or autumnal shades, as in the bottom photo. Or maybe the colors of saris, or eggshell colors, or rainbows, or various shades of red!
We want this monthly Koigu Journal to be not just a pattern of the month, but an exploration of how you can also make your projects exciting, unusual, sophisticated and just plain fun.
We'll be back next month!

What about just three colors that share something? These all have some sharp purple and a bit of magenta in common.
We'd love to see the scarf with lots of pale stipples.

Super Mod Scarf
Finished Measurements 8"/20cm at widest point X 58"/147cm
Materials Koigu Kersti: #2335 (A), #1005 (B), #1530 (C), #2120 (D), #2340 (E), #1070 (F), #1150 (G), #2388 (H), #2332 (I): 1 skein each.
Needles US6/4mm: 40"/100cm, 24"/60cm for working narrow bands.
Gauge 20 sts X 36 rows = 4"/10cm
Notes Scarf is worked in garter st (knit every row)
When  working short vertical sections, bringing the new color up in front of the old color to the row just finished will make a neat edge.
There is a row count for the beginning section in order to make it easy to have he correct number of sts for the following sections.
Scarf With A and shorter needle, CO 12 sts. Knit 2 rows. Attach B; knit 2 rows. Continue alternating 2 rows A, 2 rows B, until there are 490 rows and piece measures approx. 58"/147cm. Bind off.
Turn piece on its side and attach C. Pick up 1st for every bump (every 2 rows) along edge. Work 1 more row. Attach D; knit 2 rows. Work 2 rows C, 2rows D, 2 rows C. Break off both colors.
Triangles: slip 24 sts to right needle and attach E to next st. Work (yo, K1, yo) into this st; pick up and knit following st.
Turn. Pick up and knit next st from right needle; knit across; pick up and knit next st on left needle.
Attach F  and continue as established, picking up and knitting one more st at each end of every row and working (yo, K1, yo) into center st of previous row, alternating 2 rows E, 2 rows F, until 24 sts have been picked up on either side of triangle. Fasten off.
Repeat Triangle instructions 4 more times, so that all sts have been used. Break off both colors.
Curved section: Attach G. Row 1: K2tog, *K across next Triangle to last 2 st; slip next st, K2tog, PSSO. Rep from * 3X, ending with K across last Triangle to last 2 sts; K2tog.
Row 2: K across. Attach H and work 2 rows as established. Rep these 2 rows 4X, changing color every 2 rows. Break off both colors.
Attach I and K 1 row. BO on wrong side.
Finishing: With I, pick up and K 1 st for every bump and 1 st for every st of narrow end. BO all sts. Rep for other narrow end.
Block gently as necessary to even, according to Finished Measurements.

Another color idea, this time KPM in autumnal shades.
