We Can Take It

August 14, 2014

"The slogan of the Civilian Conservation Corps is 'We can take it!' Building strong bodies is a major CCC objective. More than half the enrollees who entered CCC the last year were seventeen years of age. Work, calisthenics, marching drill, good food, and medical care feature the CCC health program."

ccc logoThere's no question that we tend to wax poetic here at PPFF when it comes to the CCC and the invaluable work the Corps accomplished in our public lands. The CCC really did turn boys into men and our parks and forests into some of the treasures we value so highly today. The Bureau of State Parks provides an online archive of the CCC in Pennsylvania that's fun to explore.

Better yet, this week take pages 18 and 19 of your Pennsylvania State Parks and State Forests Passport in hand and set out to find a few of the signature bridges, dams, pavilions, cabins and trails that are still there thanks to the work of a bunch of teenagers.
lisas toes
If you want to find a place where EVERYONE loves the outdoors, that would have to be Cucumber Falls at Ohiopyle. Samantha found that out last week!

Our only question from Wiggle Your Toes Week is why we only had girl toes. Where are all the boy toes? Don't they deserve a wiggle, too? Send your picture to the Facebook group (or visit the website photo gallery) and share the fun.

PPFF On the Move

Promised Land State Park is the setting for this weekend's third annual CCC reunion festival. It's your chance to visit with Actual CCC Boys and hear their stories first hand. Consider also the Laurel Hill Bluegrass Festival and a visit to the park's CCC Museum.

Smile Please

Tuesday, August 19, is Photography Day. Which we think means it's the perfect time to be sure that we have your entry into the Parks & Forests Thru the Seasons photo contest! There are nifty prizes at stake - not to mention bragging rights and your spot in a cross-Pennsylvania gallery tour of the winning shots.

Health Watch

As we prepare Goal Tender this week, the news is filled with the tragic death of Robin Williams, apparently by his own hand. It's ever so hard to imagine that someone with what seemed to have been an effortless capacity to spread humor and joy to millions was, himself, suffering so deeply with depression.
Joe & Izzy get happy
WebMD shared some timely thoughts about recognizing the symptoms of depression, how to treat it, how we can help.

It's worth noting there is more and more evidence, for example in this piece from Outside magazine, that time spent outdoors in nature can help to alleviate some of the brutal effects of depression. So count your lucky stars - you're already doing something very positive for your mental health. Thanks for helping us spread the word.
