Going electric

You may have seen one of these electric buses on the streets of Winnipeg. These made-in-Manitoba transit buses feature a rapid charge battery system. Only 20 minutes to fully charge the bus. Apparently it passed muster with our Winnipeg winter – if it survived last year, it can survive any winter! Coming to a route near you? Get the story here.

Grabbing a nap

Turns out it's not only Ottawa commuters who enjoy a nap on OC Transpo buses! Read the full CBC story here.

Get paid to bike?

In France, 20 companies have joined an experiment that pays employees to bike to work. Nice! Where do we sign up for that? Sometimes it takes more than a financial incentive to get more people pedalling. Like showers, secure bike parking (and the absence of free car parking).

Sherbrook has a new lane!

In an exciting first for Winnipeg, construction on a 'parking protected bike lane' is underway on Sherbrook Street. Popular in Montreal for decades, the rest of us are now catching on to how appealing protected bike lanes are for people of all ages. To see how they work, check out the Green Lane Project's Protected Bike Lanes 101.

Wal-Mart, RONA go walkable

Walkability has become the new mantra for retailers of all sizes in urban centres. Recent studies have found that walk-friendly areas generate more in retail sales than areas with fair and poor walkability. This realization, combined with a decrease in the productivity of big-box stores, has prompted retailers such as Canadian Tire, Loblaw, RONA, and Wal-Mart to open smaller retail stores in urban centres.

HR: Top 3 reasons

Here are 3 HR reasons to support active and green commuting options at your workplace:
  1. For the health of it - Another great study, this one from the UK, found people who walk, bike, or take transit to work have lower BMI scores than those who drive, equivalent to an average 6-7 pound difference. Sweet!
  2. For happier staff - Active employees are happier and take fewer sick days. You really can't go wrong with happy staff!
  3. For the best new recruits - Young people entering the workforce are less interested in driving and more interested in work-life balance.

Carpooling made easy

Pamela Whaley and Chelsea Hansen share the ride to work each day from Selkirk to Winnipeg. These provincial employees find carpooling is way more fun than driving alone. "Driving is stressful, and can drain your energy but if you have a fun person in the car with you it’s uplifting and fun!," says Chelsea. Check out their tips on how to make carpooling easy.
