Engel & Völkers Polo Cup

The Engel & Völkers Polo Cup took place on Christian Völkers’ private finca estate “Son Coll” for the sixth time this year. More than 600 employees, business partners, friends and international guests from the worlds of politics, media, culture, business and sport witnessed this wonderful event. The Engel & Völkers Polo Cup was held for the first time in the summer of 2009, and has since established itself as a highlight of the social calendar on the island.
A total of six teams of three players each competed over the three-day tournament. The teams were put forward by the sponsors Bentley, Cartier, Vertu, La Martina, Forest Lakes, and Engel & Völkers. The host Christian Völkers participated in the Engel & Völkers Team on all three match days. After the pre-rounds on Wednesday and Thursday, the semi-final and Final were then held on Friday.

Africans in Normandy !
With the recent news of immigrants in Calais and on the Normandy coast some still think that Africans may be synonymous with refugees. It was not always this way. Both 1st and 2nd World wars brought many Africans to the coast of France, not as refugees but as soldiers. However in Deauville where the Coupe d’Or is getting underway, the African connection is very different.
Who would have realised that the train station in Deauville is an almost exact copy of that in Pointe-Noire in what is now the Republic of Congo. Coincidentally or not, a team named POINTE-NOIRE won the Coupe d'Or in 1954.
Nigerian teams, ANADARIYA in 1977 and SONGHAI CHOPENDOZ in 1978 carried the cup away two years running, although not to Pointe-Noire but across the Gulf of Guinea to Lagos. The coincidence would have been too much.
An Egyptian team, the FALCONS won not less than 7 times between 1979 and 1997, a record never equalled.
This year, the Europeans are likely to carry the cup away with a single Swiss and a single Spanish team confronting three French teams and in a strange way, this turnout is a reflection of the ups and downs of many a club. After having been the most sort after cup on the continent for many years, the tide has swung away. Sotogrande has established itself over the years, and St. Tropez is apparently planning a high goal season in the near future. The competition on and off the field at any level is fierce, but at the top, no club can rest on its laurels for long. The polo world has no doubt changed and playboys may have become older and poorer, but passion for polo lives on and no doubt Deauville will return to the crazy days and nights it once knew.

Comments & Opinion

Champagne & Flags.
Much is said aboutwhat the Argentines, the British and perhaps to a lesser extent the Indians gave to polo. If some still think that the French contribution is limited to the Macaires on the field and to the contents of their glasses, be it champagne or wine off, perhaps they might wish to cast their eyes round the field once again. At both ends goal judges are to be seen. This idea was introduced in Paris, at Bagatelle sometime after its foundation in 1891. As the field there is notoriously small, minds unkind may think that champagne may have been indirectly responsible for the introduction of the now-indispensable goal-judges. They are nevertheless a priceless French gift to polo.
