Volume 2: Edition 8

The "Dog Days of Summer" are upon us already! But we still have plenty of Pinewood Players events to enjoy. Our final Theatre in the Pines main stage production of the season, "Cactus Flower," begins on August 22, our second Members General Meeting is scheduled for August 23, another Cabaret Nights, Reader's Theatre production is on tap at Pinewood Country Club September 4 & 7, and the Wrap Party is all set for September 6. So plan to join in the fun and make the most of the remaining season by enjoying all of the remaining events. Our Profiles feature concludes for the season with a profile of Don Miller, Director of "Cactus Flower." We hope you enjoy our newsletter and welcome your comments and suggestions.

 Profiles

Don Miller

After 43 years in the video/film and advertising industry as a Producer/Director, Don joined Pinewood Players last year on stage in a reversal of roles.  After acting and "singing" in the role of Dr. Kitchell in "Bells Are Ringing," and then as Jeff Elbies in "Wrong Window," Don decided to throw his hat in the ring as the director of  "Cactus Flower," this year's  final performance by the Pinewood Players.

Career achievements include an Emmy for Cinematography and Editing for a short film, "Freedom Festival," and numerous Gold and Platinum "Tellies," an international corporate video competition.

Don says "Directing  "Cactus Flower" is another wonderful experience, working with the talented Pinewood cast and learning just how much help is available in Munds Park just for the asking!"

August News Clips

Cactus Flower

Pinewood Players will present “Cactus Flower” on the main stage at the Pinewood Playhouse opening Friday, August 22 and running August 23, 24 and August 28, 29 & 30. Many will remember the 1970’s movie version starring Goldie Hawn in her film debut alongside veteran actors Ingrid Bergman and Walter Matthau who shared the lead roles with the newcomer. Goldie Hawn won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress as well as a Golden Globe in the same category. The screenplay was adapted by L.A.L. Diamond from a Broadway stage play written by Abe Burrows which in turn was based upon the French play Fleur de cactus by Pierre Barillet and Jean-Pierre Grédy. The film was released in late 1969 and became the seventh highest grossing film of 1970. The Pinewood Players production will be directed by Don Miller with a veteran cast including Cheryl Parker playing the Goldie Hawn role of Toni Simmons and Bill Gibney in the Walter Matthau role of Dr. Julian Winston. Melanie Westmark will play Stephanie Dickinson, the loyal receptionist and assistant played by Ingrid Bergman in the movie.  The role of Igor, Toni’s neighbor and other romantic interest is played by local businessman Bill Spain in his debut on the Pinewood Playhouse stage.
