August 2014 Newsletter

Hello fellow Bedlamites,

It's that time of the year again and the Edinburgh Festival Fringe is underway and Edinburgh is filling up with theatre goers ready to watch the 3000+ shows taking place this year. Here's what we have coming up for you:

1. Bedlam Fringe is open for business
2. There's a new door on the balcony...!
3. Help us raise money (for free)
4. Bedlam's theatre conversion season
5. The Friends of Bedlam annual general meeting

Bedlam at the Fringe

Bedlam has opened it's big red doors for another Fringe and as ever it's looking great. There will be thirteen shows running over the next 3 weeks and two of these will be from the Edinburgh University Theatre Company (EUTC). As is tradition, the Improverts will be performing at half past midnight while celebrating their 25th Fringe anniversary. The other EUTC show, The Lift, follows nine stranded lift goers as they deal with impending danger. The Lift will be on at 3pm between the 11th and 17th August.
We are also proud to have offered funding support to Zut Alors Theatre's Games of Love and Chance. The company is newly formed by a number of ex-Bedlamites and is an adaptation by David K Barnes. The show will be on at 2.55pm between the 18th and 23rd August. If you're in Edinburgh then pop by Bedlam and take a trip down memory lane, see some shows, have a drink and some food at the bar, and chat to the staff. You can find out more about what's going on at Bedlam this Fringe by checking out their website at www.bedlamfringe.co.uk.

For a full list of all things Bedlam folk are up to, Bedlamite Esmond Sage has put together a list that reaches across generations as old as 2011...
We'd love to add older Bedlamite shows to the list - check it out on Facebook!

Gateway to the costume cupboard...

You heard it here first... You can now access the Costume Cupboard from the Stage Left balcony! Tom Turner, Technical Manager of Bedlam Fringe tells us, "Sometimes the freshers head down the balcony and I ask them where they're going..." It's the quickest route down to the stage, but it might take some of us a while to acclimatise...

Easy Fundraising

Friends of Bedlam is proud of the fact that it can help support shows at Bedlam and support the next generation of theatre artists, but for us to be able to do this we need money. We keep our admin costs low so almost all funds that are raised can go to good uses. A great way to help us raise money is to use the tools provided by Easy Fundraising. Every time you shop online with selected retailers (including Amazon, Debenhams, and Expedia) a percentage of the money you spend is donated to Friends of Bedlam by the retailer. What better way to help, we get the money to help fund projects and it doesn't cost you a penny. Just head over to Easy Fundraising where you can sign up and get supporting. You can also use their Find & Remind tool to make sure you don't miss out on any valuable donations, you can find out more about this at http://www.easyfundraising.org.uk/raise-more/find-and-remind/.

Theatre Conversion Season

Next year, the first 6 shows of term time will all be theatre conversions. In a bold and exciting move, Fresher's Play 2014 will be performed in the round...! The first four shows of term-time next year are pieces of new writing - so Bedlam will really be keeping things fresh.

Annual General Meeting

The Friends of Bedlam Annual General Meeting will be taking place on Saturday 23rd August at 1.30pm at the Cloisters Bar (26 Brougham Street Edinburgh, EH3 9JH). We will be discussing what has been happening over the past year, what the plan is for the next year and voting in people for any vacant committee positions. We'll almost certainly be having a drink as well and catching up since everyone is scattered all over the country (and in some instances the world). For any updates on the meeting please keep an eye on our website at www.friendsofbedlam.co.uk. Anyone wishing to vote on any matters will need to have made a minimum £5 donation in the year, but all are welcome to join in the discussions. If you plan to attend or if you have any questions then please email info@friendsofbedlam.co.uk.
Thanks for reading, and hope to hear from you soon!
