Message from the Mayor
Welcome to the June/July edition of news@scenicrim.
Council is continuing to drive ahead with the Beaudesert Town Centre Bypass project. We recently endorsed the recommendations of a new business case which Council
co-funded with the Department of Transport and Main Roads. You can read more about this below, but it clears yet another road block towards the delivery of this vital piece of infrastructure for the Scenic Rim community. I remain committed to seeing this project completed and will continue to advocate at the highest levels for the dollars to achieve this.
Carbon Tax Savings
Council expects to pass on Carbon Tax savings to ratepayers following the repeal of the legislation in Federal Parliament. As Mayor, I am committed to ensuring ratepayers benefit from any savings achieved by Council following the removal of the Carbon Tax. I was strongly opposed to this failed tax which simply burdened Australian households and businesses with higher costs and financial pressures. Unlike metropolitan councils, which were directly liable for Carbon Tax contributions as emitters, the impost of the tax on Scenic Rim Regional Council was in the form of increased costs for services and materials, such as electricity, passed on by suppliers. While it is reasonable to assume these costs will fall once the Carbon Tax component is removed from pricing, Council will need to review the actual flow-on effects before finalising any potential change to our Budget and rating outcomes. This will likely be considered in our Quarterly Budget Review in October, by which time Council will have a clearer picture of the extent of savings achieved from 1 July 2014 onwards. Council will then determine the most effective means of passing on potential savings to ratepayers.
Cr John Brent, Mayor
