Question:  "Why does my neck seem to make a lot of "popping or crunching" sounds every time I move it?"
Answer:   When you are able to hear the popping sound it can be of two different causes.  It the joint pops, it will only pop once and then will not be able to pop it again for about another 20 minutes.  The other cause is if muscles are tight, there will be increased tension and compression on the muscle groups.  This is similar to snapping your fingers.  If there is not much tension between the fingers, no sound will occur.  With increased compression, then we start to here the snap.  There is no waiting to here another snap and is regularly reproducible.

Research Study...

Potential Adverse Cardiovascular Effects From
Excessive Endurance Exercise

James H. O’Keefe, MD; Harshal R. Patil, MD; Carl J. Lavie, MD; Anthony Magalski, MD; Robert A. Vogel, MD; and Peter A. McCullough, MD, MPH
Mayo Clin Proc. 2012;87(6):587-595

This study was investigating the adverse effects of prolonged endurance training (ET) that is performed in marathons, triathlons and endurance cycling causing sudden cardiac death (SCD). The statistics reveal that the occurrence in of SCD is 1 out of 100,000 for marathons with the last 1 mile accounting for 50% of the deaths. This ratio has not changed over the decades, but the number of occurrences have increased because of the 20 fold rise in the number of participants since the past 35 years.
It's been shown that ET increases inflammatory markers of the heart muscle.  They do resolve in 1 week, but with years of training like this, there are a small percentage of cases that develop scarring of the heart muscle.  This leads to an abnormal heart rate (predominantly in athletes over 30 years old) that can cause a sudden heart attack.
Rest assured, the author's do not suggest stop exercising, even ET events.  The benefits far outweigh the potential negative effects.  Quoting from the paper, "It is
extremely important to keep in mind that the occurrence of SCD during marathons, triathlons, and collegiate athletic events is rare and should not deter individuals from participating in vigorous ET; the benefits of regular PA to the individual and to society as a whole far outweigh potential risks."
Stretch of the Month...
TV Stretch
This is a good move for getting at the muscles of the front of the neck.  I call this the TV stretch because it can be done will watching TV.  Use your arms as pillars and have your head cradled into the hands.  You will sense the neck stretch in the front and will seem that the head will go into extension.  Again, relax your head into the hands and try not to have and muscle contraction in the neck area.  As the stretch occurs, you might find that you cough a bit.  This is OK and are only the throat muscles stretching because of being to tight.
