Resident Newsletter

Summer 2014

Welcome to our New Residents!

In early July, we welcomed almost 150 new learners to the postgraduate programs at Queen’s University.  These new learners included PGY1 residents beginning their residency careers in Kingston, Belleville, Oshawa, and Peterborough, PGY3 residents starting enhanced skills programs in Family Medicine, PGY4 residents in subspecialty medicine, and residents transferring to Queen’s from other institutions.

Our office team is available to help you in any way we can, so please don't be shy about contacting us.  We’re here to help and you can find our office at 70 Barrie Street, directly across from City Park.  We’re open Monday to Friday from 8:30am-4:30pm.  Please note that we’re closed daily between 12:00-1:00pm.

Meet Your Postgraduate Dean

Dr. Ross Walker began his term as Associate Dean, Postgraduate Medical Education in July 2010.  Before joining the PGME Office, Dr. Walker had been the Program Director for General Surgery since 1997, and for Core Surgery from 1991-1997.

Dr. Walker received his MD from the University of Western Ontario, completed his internship and residency training at Queen’s University, and a fellowship in surgical oncology in New York.  In addition to maintaining a busy surgical practice, Dr. Walker is also an award-winning professor who has been recognized nationally for his contributions to clinical education.

In his spare time, Dr. Walker is an avid skier who also enjoys cycling, swimming, gardening, and relaxing at the cottage with his family.  He is always pleased to meet with residents and he can be reached through his Assistant, Darlene Davis, at d.davis@queensu.ca.

Postgraduate Convocation 2014

The annual Postgraduate Convocation ceremony was held this year on June 23rd.  Over 100 postgraduate residents received their Certificates of Completion, presented by their Program Directors in addition to Dr. Richard Reznick (Dean, Faculty of Health Sciences) and Dr. Ross Walker (Associate Dean).  A reception followed for certificants, faculty, family, and friends.  Pictured here are final year Internal Medicine residents who were presented with their certificates by Dr. Christopher Smith (Program Director - Internal Medicine). Also pictured are Program Administrators Denise Jones and Claudia Trost.  Congratulations to everyone!

Resident Health and Wellness Resources

Residents seeking information about health and wellness should consult the PGME website.  In addition to information about the role of Dr. Melissa Andrew, Director of Resident Affairs (a valuable resource for residents in difficulty), there is information about the Regional Learner Advocates based in Belleville, Oshawa, and Peterborough.

The website contains a list of Frequently Asked Questions, covering such topics as transfers, leaves of absence, and postgraduate policies.  Residents can also access a comprehensive list of health and wellness resources not only on the Queen’s campus but also locally and provincially.

Upcoming OSCE

All PGY2 RCPSC residents will be required to participate in an OSCE scheduled for September 10, 2014.  The OSCE provides valuable experience in preparing for the Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Examination - Part II.  Participating residents should have already received information from the PGME Office regarding this OSCE.  Family Medicine residents who are off-cycle are also welcome to participate, space permitting.  A separate Family Medicine OSCE will be held in the spring of 2015.  For further information, please contact Krista Knight in the Postgraduate Office.

International Resident Leadership Summit

Residents play a critical leadership role in postgraduate medical education. Entering its eighth year, the International Resident Leadership Summit (IRLS) is an extension of the International Conference on Residency Education (ICRE). The summit is one of Canada’s premier resident development events, a two-day conference dedicated to supporting present and future resident leaders.  It will take place this year on October 25-26 in Toronto.

Visit the IRLS website to learn more.

Resident Bursaries, Awards, and Grants

Postgraduate Bursaries and Awards

A variety of bursaries and awards are available through the PGME Office for residents in any program.  The bursaries, based on financial need, are open to all residents and application forms are due in January.   Fellowships are also available for residents applying to the Clinician Investigator Program.  Information is available at http://meds.queensu.ca/education/postgraduate/awards

Royal College Resident Funding

It’s awards-and-grants season at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. They are welcoming submissions from residents in Royal College accredited specialty medicine programs. Apply for a valuable grant, scholarship and fellowship to advance your skills and competence.
Here are just a few of ways the Royal College can support your development through its awards-and-grants program:
  • Study the highest standards at home or abroad. Gain valuable experience for clinical practice at medical centres in Canada or abroad with the Detweiler Travelling Fellowship. This opportunity — a $21,000 value for junior applicants — is open to final-year residents and Fellows in their first five years post-certification, in all surgical and medical disciplines.
  • Study surgery in the U.K. Final-year surgery residents can advance their skill set in the United Kingdom under the Royal College’s new Harry S. Morton Travelling Fellowship in Surgery. This fellowship is a wonderful opportunity to gain surgical skills and training abroad for up to $50,000/year. Not only will your future practice benefit, the expertise you bring home will also build excellence in your current academic program.
  • Build a career in #MedEd. The Royal College will donate $40,000 in funding towards one year of a Masters or PhD in Education under the Robert Maudsley Fellowship for Studies in Medical Education. The goal of this fellowship is to increase the number and quality of professionally trained medical educators in Canada.
  • Research the historical archives of the Royal College in Ottawa. If you are undertaking a research project in the history of specialty medicine or medical education in Canada, consider applying for the Peter Warren Travelling Scholarship. This scholarship is exclusively for residents from all medical and surgical disciplines.
To apply for these and other exciting opportunities, visit www.royalcollege.ca/awards or email awards@royalcollege.ca. The deadline for all applications and nominations is September 2, 2014.

Resident Award Winners

Congratulations to Drs. Davin Johnson (Ophthalmology) and Jennifer Tang (Emergency Medicine), winners of the Dr. Sanjay Sharma Clinical Resident Award.  The award recognizes residents who have gone above and beyond the call of duty in providing outstanding patient care.  The award was presented by Dr. Sanjay Sharma, along with Dr. Ross Walker (Associate Dean, Postgraduate Medical Education).

Transfer Information

Every year, residents decide for a variety of reasons to apply to transfer to a new residency program either at Queen’s or at another university.  Transfer requests are most commonly received from PGY1 residents and the PGME Office begins to receive inquires about the transfer process almost immediately after the beginning of each new academic year.

If you are a PGY1 resident already thinking about transferring, you should be aware that you must spend at least six months in your current program before any application can be made to transfer.  This period ensures that you have had sufficient exposure to your residency program to make an informed decision.  If you still wish to transfer after six months, then you may contact the PGME Office to discuss a potential transfer to another program or university.  You will be able to discuss your situation and the transfer process with Ms. Jordan Sinnett, the PGME Program Manager, in complete confidence.

In the meantime, our office would encourage you to consult the transfer policy on the postgraduate website.  You should also consider discussing any concerns about your current program with your Program Director.   It’s their job to support you during residency and offer you all possible help and guidance.
