September News and Events in Loring Park

Update on Loring Park's first Bed & Breakfast

At the turn of the century one man got the city so energized about the arts that the city planners wanted the roads to radiate out from the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, like the Louvre in Paris.  The man was Eugene J Carpenter, and it was his passion that awakened the need for a vibrant creative sector in Minneapolis.  In the Bed & Breakfast at 300 Clifton, above Loring Park, the new owners celebrate the vision of Eugene Carpenter who changed Minneapolis into an arts town and set a tradition of corporate giving that is unrivaled in virtually any other city.  300 Clifton is a grand old Georgian style house, one of only 10 mansions left out of 24 on the avenue.  The 1906 splendor radiates from the walls at 300 Clifton,  and they use this platform to tell the pivotal story of Eugene Carpenter, in his very own historic house.
Bed & Breakfast to open Spring of 2015, but stay tuned for Ghost Tours and Halloween Party in October!

The Continuing Saga of the Loring Pond Cattails

After special legislation earlier this year allowed the Park Board to receive permits from the Department of Natural Resources to remove cattails, you'll see some action this fall.  A new experimental method of cattail removal will begin shortly.  Here's what to expect:  All cattails will be cut about 4 to 6 inches below the waterline with a mower.  The  cattail debris will be raked to the shore and removed from Loring Park in dump trucks.  To keep park users safely away from the work area and equipment, cones and signs will cordon off the work area.

Next spring, expect to see a second round of work.  Cattails re-growth will be cut back again to maintain a water level of about 3 inches above the stalks. This method cuts of the oxygen supply to the plant. And re-growth will be monitored with additional cutting in the fall of 2015 as necessary.  Cattail management requires continued maintenance and singe-minded persistence because it depends on depriving the root system of oxygen and food produced by the stalk growth.

Initial costs for the project are expected to be about $56,000 and will be funded by discretionary funds allotted to each district.

Workgroup Established to Restore the Berger Fountain

Friends of Loring Park has created a Berger Fountain Workgroup.  There will be 2 Reps from Friends of Loring Park, 2 from the Loring Greenway Association, and 2 from CLPC.  CLPC Board appointed Mary Bujold and Paula Buckner to this Workgroup.  This group will work with Minneapolis Park & Recreation staff to 1) Identify cost of long term repair 2) Create and fundraise for an aesthetically pleasing winter cover, 3) Identify a plan and materials to rebuild and restore the Berger Fountain Plaza, and 4) Pursue a raised crosswalk similar to those proposed for Nicollet Mall between Loring Greenway and Loring Park at the Fountain.  Fundraising for this project will also be a component for the Workgroup.

Loring Park Rezoning Study to Begin Early 2015

A Rezoning Study is a key tool that allows the City to implement land use policy adopted by the City Council. Studies usually take place shortly after the completion of a planning process and result in a recommendation to change the zoning of multiple parcels so that zoning is consistent with adopted future land use plans. The Loring Park rezoning study will make zoning consistent with the Loring Park Master Plan adopted in late 2013.

According to City officials, there are adopted plans that cover areas all over the City.  It is the City’s goal to encourage the type of development envisioned in adopted City plans and prevent development that is inconsistent with those plans. The City also has a legal obligation to ensure that zoning reflects adopted land use goals.

There is no target date for a first community meeting but it will be advertized at least 45 days in advance. Stay tuned for more updates.
