DO Something!

Upcoming Events - Reality Party 9/13
Parents Invited to Tour Teen Party
Saturday, September 13th (3-8pm), Pasadena

Alcohol is the most widely misused drug by youth in our community, with serious, potentially lifelong negative consequences. However, many youth and parents underestimate the dangers of alcohol use.

To better inform the community about the risks of underage alcohol use, RAD Coalition members, Day One, Jewish Family Services, and the Pasadena Public Health Department, are staging a "house party" to give parents an eye-opening opportunity to learn more about the current realities of underage drinking parties.

Parents will take a 30 minute tour through a “party” in a local residence and then participate in a 30 minute debrief discussion and resource fair. Youth actors and local teens will depict drug and alcohol use, as well as dangerous behavior typically present at a local party.

The event is free and open to the public. Adults only.

Block9 in Photos
A series of fun and free activities, events, and opportunities to make the community a little nicer, Block9 was inspired by a Youth Advocate-led observational survey of Northwest Pasadena in spring 2013. The 2014 iteration took place closer to home, but with artful outings in the broader community. Check out our website to see some snapshots of this year's event.
SGV Bike Plan Nears the Finish Line!
Over the past year Day One staff and BikeSGV volunteers have worked hand-in-hand with 5 cities - Monterey Park, San Gabriel, Baldwin Park, El Monte and South El Monte - to develop the first regional Bicycle Master Plan in the San Gabriel Valley.

Designed to encourage healthier, more active lifestyles by creating an interconnected bicycle network that is safe and easily accessible for people of all ages and abilities, the plan is close to completion. Draft recommendations are currently being reviewed by local residents, stakeholders and decision-makers. For more info about the plan, proposed bikeway maps, and upcoming public meetings, visit the project website www.dobikeplan.com.
Bike Safety Checkpoints Come to NW Pasadena
Thanks to a partnership between Day One and Huntington Memorial Hospital, at least 200 people on bikes in Northwest Pasadena have received a helmet and/or set of bicycle lights this summer.

“Getting around town by bike is great way to get some exercise, but people on bikes, especially youth, need to be visible when they are riding,” shared Christy Zamani, Executive Director of Pasadena-based public health non-profit Day One. “Helmets can also literally be a lifesaver, in addition to being the law for anyone under the age of 18.”

The injury prevention project is made possible by the generous support of the Huntington Hospital Trauma Center, which has provided almost $10,000 worth of high-quality bicycle lights and helmets from local retailer Performance Bicycles.

Action Alert - Support Safer School Zones!

If you speed through a construction zone in a car, your ticket will be twice as big. But not if you do the same in school zones. SB 1151 would increase fines for traffic violations in school zones, with proceeds funding bike/ped safety for kids across CA.

Send an email to Governor Brown today and tell him to support SB 1151!

Fast Fact
