THIS WEEK'S EVENTS

Meet Our New Department Chair,
Professor Caryl Flinn!

As the new Chair of the Department of Screen Arts & Cultures, I wanted to send everybody a warm welcome to the fall 2014 term. This is my third year at SAC here at UM, and it's been a delight to be in such a stimulating environment. I've taught Classical Film Theory (SAC 272), and introduced Media Critical Theory and Cultural Studies (SAC 475) into the curriculum. I've also offered graduate seminars in historiography and on camp and kitsch, one of my research interests, along with film music, gender theory, and musicals. (There is more about me and my publications on my faculty web page).

I am especially happy to introduce David Marek to SAC as a visiting instructor in our production program. David is an accomplished filmmaker, especially of short films. An equally experienced and versatile teacher, David will be offering SAC 290-Intro to Media Production, SAC 301-Documentary I, and SAC 422-Avant Garde Film in fall 2014.

On a different note, we say goodbye to Stashu Kybartas, who recently retired. Stashu was an outstanding teacher in production, offering courses in film and video production as well as in documentary and experimental film; he is also an award-winning filmmaker. We appreciate all the hard work Stashu did for the department, particularly as Associate Chair, and for the vitality he brought to the department. We will miss him.

Please keep an eye out for our newsletters for the latest updates and announcements, many of which are listed on our website. So again, to our students, their parents, alumni, staff, faculty and all other friends of the department, welcome, and I hope you have a productive fall.

Welcome back, students!
