Seabuckthorn

is an ideal ingredient for naturally healthy skincare

Description

Seabuckthorn is a bright orange berry grown in Eastern Russia and Siberia, North China, thriving in cold climates. It has an aroma slightly similar to pineapple, so sometimes seabuckthorn is referred to as “Northern pineapple”.

These short shrubs with thorny branches has berries literally “glued” all over them. Seabuckthorn likes the banks of rivers, seas and lakes. It grows on sandy soil as well as in the mountains over 2000 metres high. Seabuckthorn is harvested in Autumn and preserved as syrup, dried berries, and oil.

Due to high concentration of vitamins C and E, it enhances immunity and has detoxifying effect on skin and body.

History

In ancient Greece an infusion of leaves and branches of seabuckthorn was given to horses to make their coat shiny and healthy. That is probably where the latin name Hippophae came from (hippos - horse, phae - to make shiny).

Usage

The berries are full of vitamin C, E, flavonoids and oils very rich in essential fatty acids, moreover they contain more carotenoids then carrots! Such high content of carotene in the oil makes the berries bright orange, very oily and concentrated.

This complex of vitamins and fatty acids has a strong antioxidant effect on skin and body. Vitamin E regulates the process of oxidation, prevents storage of toxic elements and free radicals. It protects from liver damage, stimulates the work of muscles, including heart muscles, and prevents muscle weakness. Seabuckthorn berries and oil are also beneficial during pregnancy.

The oil started to be used in cosmetics and beauty relatively recently, while it has been used as a medicinal, healing oil for years in Russia, China and Mongolia. It has been a real “Orange Queen” of herbal medicine. In Tibetan medicine the healing properties of this oily extract has been highly valued in treatment of liver, stomach and intestinal dysfunctions. The topical application of the oil heals eczema, burns, sun damaged skin, lesions and abrasions. Seabuckthorn berries and oil, when applied on hair, enhance its shine and gloss.

Skincare Benefits

Currently Seabuckthorn oil is added to anti-aging formulations to smooth wrinkles and heal dry and sun damaged skin. All the components and anti-oxidants nourish, restore and regenerate skin.

The oil has many benefits for skin, including anti-inflammatory, scar-healing, anti-bacterial, regenerating properties. One of the ingredients of the oil - palmitoleic acid is a component of human skin. The only other major source of this acid is the macadamia nut. The oil is highly nourishing due to high content of fatty acids, such as oleic, linoleic, palmitic acids. Seabuckthorn oil helps to regenerate skin tissue, thus rejuvenating and also has UV-blocking properties.
