Interview with Gomez Pugh

The Voice of Vic Speaks

For a long time I've been hesitant about producing PsyCop in audio because I knew the vocal performance would make or break the audio. But I couldn't have asked for a better Victor Bayne than Gomez Pugh, and he was kind enough to answer some questions about what it was like bringing PsyCop to life.

Jordan: You have a really versatile voice. Are there any challenges to voicing multiple characters?

Gomez: Funny you should ask that! I just wrapped recording on another title which was dialogue heavy, switching back and forth between a Cuban hitman educated in Oslo and a Jamaican drug dealer. That one gave me a run for my money! Usually things are not that crazy. I have always loved doing voices, characters and accents, so most of the time it is just a really fun challenge. I would say the main challenge with multiple characters in an audiobook is when there are many minor characters who are a similar type. Finding a main character's voice is easier in that you have more information, and more time with them to get it right. But if a character only says a few lines, it can be difficult to figure out who they are and how to make them different from the other similar roles.

I was so grateful for your input with Marks and Gutierrez. Just like when you are non-voice acting (theatre, tv and film), you do your preparation and bring in your ideas about the character, but it is the collaboration that I find exciting. I always like having the writer in the room for rehearsals. So working with you reminded me of that.

Jordan: Was there anything special you thought about to keep you in a Victor Bayne frame of mind?

Gomez: Not really. I have to say, as soon as I started reading the book, I instantly identified with Bayne. I just love his character. Plus I have always been a huge fan of Noir and he definitely has that feel to me. So, it was a really good fit and I loved getting to explore this world you have created through his eyes.

Jordan: Who was your favorite minor character in Among the Living and why?

Gomez: Hmmm . . . that's tough. Hard to pick just one. I really liked Warwick. I love playing with that dialect and he is a fun no nonsense kinda guy. So different from Bayne (and me). I will always have a sweet spot for Jackie the Loudmouthed Prostitute. :-)
