The Marques de Riscal team that also reached the final undefeated, began taking the lead with a three goal advantage in the opening minutes of the match. Royal Barriere manages to focus after few minutes of distraction, and scoring 9 consecutive goals, took an advantage of 6 goals that maintained until the fifth chukker. An unforgettable Game
On Saturday 30th August, Sotogrande closed their 2014 polo season.
As always there were a lot of games for a whole month, a month that seemed to be relentlessly endless. Every single day was a polo day ; high, medium and low.
In addition to the record number of players, teams and horses, we also witnessed a very special record, the winners of the high and low goal (Valiente & Huntsmann) took the triple crown.
In the low handicap Hantsman team finished undefeated, really playing at a much higher level than all of their opponents. In the medium, while Equus, did not finish unbeaten but in the three Tournaments lost only one game!, an unrivalled achievement ,wining Silver and Gold.
The high Goal was really very high level. An extremely competitive tournament with teams coming better prepared and better organized every year. This year five 10 goallers competed.
The Final was an incredible game, a much overused adjective but in this case entirely appropriate. Many people said that it was the best game of polo throughout the European season 2014, but I dare say that Europe has never seen a game like this before.
Great goals ,with spectacular runs from end to end of the field, masterful plays that kept the public numbering thousands of spectators practically on their toes throughout the match. The two sides were tied throughout the match. Just before the end 20 goals had been scored but the teams were still tied with 10 a piece at the beginning of the last chukker. Gonzalito and Facundo knew that Valiente was a very solid, tough team, not only because of Cambiaso but his team mates Laborde and most especially Santi Torres were playing well above their handicaps. This made them virtually unbeatable. The game hung in the balance. Finally in the last chukker Cambiaso & Co. took a two-goal lead. Facundo could have closed the gap to just one goal but would have needed another minute to play. It did not happen and Cambiaso scored once again to finish winning by three. In conclusion, Adolfo Cambiaso played a great game and great tournament and finally took home the only trophy that was missing from his trophy room, the "Sotogrande Triple Crown". Gonzalito and Facundo, knew that it was going to be very difficult right from the start, but they were really very very close.
The Polo show given by these two teams and especially by Facundo Pieres and Adolfo Cambiaso will be long remembered, most especially by those of us who had the privilege, last Saturday, of being at the Los Pinos Nº4 field in the Santa Maria Polo Club..

Comments & Opinion
Polo, sport par excellence of Knights and Kings has a longer history than any other sport still practiced today. It is the probably the oldest team game still exercised. Emperors encouraged the sport for training of their troops. Polo has certainly been around in one form or another since man tamed horses and played ball games.
From these dispersed roots, today’s modern game came into being practiced in many countries around the world. It is not an ordinary sport, but the King of the sport and the sport of kings.
England, the United States and Argentina, amongst others, have a rich history of tournaments and players who impressed the world at different times. It is these three countries, by tradition, quality and quantity of players and tournaments, that currently lead, control and influence the game.
However, they do so independently and no global body meets regularly to coordinate matters affecting all polo players. ( In comparison Formula 1 motor racing is a relatively modern sport and yet has been tightly coordinated for many years.) Polo remains geographically separate, each country has its rules, and the years pass and meetings too, but no global agreement has ever yet been reached. It is not just a matter of rules but of structures and powers, notably in disciplinary matters. Those countries mentioned are organized and their associations can really be said to be in control. For the rest of the Polo planet, the same cannot unfortunately be said. Tournaments may be held, even in the same country under differing rules, and when matters arise which they almost inevitably do, if and when a complaints committee exists, it is sometimes only on paper.
