PREWITT MISSION UPDATE

August 2014

What a summer it has been! Two youth camps (Piedmont and Young Disciple) nearly in a row amounted to three weeks of my favorite type of ministry. And at the latter camp, working with Sean Nebblett, Cody Francis and John Bradshaw was particularly rewarding as we saw many of the campers make significant commitments to the Lord.

(Not to mention that the canvassers this year at Young Disciple Camp were aided by Courtney Johnson, Nataly Arana and Rachel Corrigan…with the result that more books were sold during camp than in any previous year!) Several of the campers have already, since going home, taken steps towards reviving their local churches.

And that reminds me that prior to camps, on our way to Piedmont (and to spend time with Heidi’s family in Virginia), we spent an evening with the Todd Christiansen family and were delighted to find that our past YD student, Darcie, has used the canvassing experience she gained at YD to successfully inspire her fellow youth to start canvassing programs in two different states! Hats off to Miss Darcie!

Following our working vacation at the camps we made our way to ASI and to the board meeting for Audioverse.org. Out of that meeting came an initiative that is providing some part time work for Heidi as a transcriptionist of sermons.
A Spanish camp-meeting in Minnesota was a blessing this year as it was last year. But this visit was more personal. Heidi and I became friends with Danely Quiroz who not only hosted us in her home, but invited guests over to talk about meaningful things. I hope this aspect of our ministry, ministry to Spanish speaking persons, increases! (It was while spending time with the Spanish speaking believers that Heidi and I decided how we would celebrate our ten-year anniversary next summer: by using our air miles to visit Costa Rica. If you know churches in Costa Rica that would be happy to trade a few sermons for a day or two of guided excursions for nature lovers, let me know!)

We also spent a few days at the Ohio “Forward to Zion” camp meeting. The fellowship there was special and it was especially nice to be speaking at the same venue as Dwayne Lemon. We are glad that he brought his entire family along.
I am conscious that when I write about speaking here and there, but don’t summarize the messages, the mission and purpose of my visits doesn’t show up well.  In August I was invited to speak at the Mentone church to fairly counter the Lunar Sabbath heresy that has taken root there (among a select few) and to address a few other issues such as women’s ordination and “spiritual formation” in a Q & A session. That session, held after a Sunday morning waffle breakfast (Andrew Blomberg brought blueberry sauce!) showed that the church has many persons who care about souls, about the truth, and about the most important things. We were hosted there by my friend from years ago, Season McDougal Smith, and her theologically involved husband David. Heidi was delighted to be in a home with the two small Smith children (Judah and Daniel).

Only a week later we were speaking at the Pacific Grove SDA Church near Monterey Bay. We have friends there from an earlier visit a couple years ago, the Steve Chang family. But as they were still suffering jetlag from a ARME meeting in Indonesia, Heidi and I were hosted by a new friend, Ken Mindoro. Eugene found Ken to be, in many ways, an uncommonly like-minded friend. And between Ken and Steve, the Prewitts were wonderfully entertained. Of special note, they took us to kayak in a special spot for birding; and helped us find the best places for watching all kinds of wildlife. While walking near the bay we observed dolphins, humpback whales, harbor seals,  sea lions, and many playful otters. This was our post-summer vacation where we added 12 birds to our life list. (Some of you might have seen a note on Facebook where in April I mentioned that I had identified my 500th bird. Well, during the last couple weeks I compiled my lists for each continent, added the scientific name, sorted them taxonomically and…. I found that I had five birds that were on two or more of the lists. So my list was reduced to 497…except that the same day it was reduced, I passed the 500th bird again. So now our list is at 509 and holding firm.)

What I have not included in this update is anything about Women’s Ordination. My book is still being read and sold. We have concluded our work on TOSC except writing projects that are ongoing. In less than a year the General Conference will face this issue. But in the meantime, everywhere I go, it comes up. Everywhere people are asking. And when I am west of the Rockies, everywhere I meet intelligent people who are a victim of well-designed propaganda. I will be pleased when the issue is resolved.
Another issue that has come up repeatedly wherever I am traveling is the issue of the Substitutionary Atonement and of God’s acts justice in destroying the wicked. It seems that persons who are more or less on-track on other issues still readily imbibe the combination of social-spiritual insights and dangerous falsehood that characterizes the teachings of Tim Jennings.

Future invitations for this fall include speaking appointments in New Mexico, Virginia, New Brunswick, British Columbia, Maryland, Tennessee, California (2x), and finally at GYC in Arizona. November will be spent at home where I will be doing Bible work all month long in conjunction with our series there by Chad and Fadia Cruizer.

That is enough for now, friends. Under 1K words! Wondering where to target donations? I still recommend the Our Home lifestyle center of Ukraine which had raised $54K of their needed $90K as of three weeks ago.

Be faithful.

Eugene
