Pennsylvania's State Parks and Forests

Environmental Education Week

August 29 to September 4

Whaddya know?

August 28, 2014

With most of the kids now back to school, just about everyone's thoughts are turning to learning. Which makes this week the perfect time to salute Environmental Education. Open your blue books ... no, your GREEN books (Pennsylvania's State Parks & State Forests Passport) to pages 43 and 44 and the environmental education centers featured there. To that list, we would add the new (well, new-ish) Resource Management Center in the Tiadaghton State Forest.

Footsteps on the moonThese wonderful places - and indeed all of the Pennsylvania state parks - offer an astonishing array of educational opportunities all year 'round. Admittedly, things tend to slow a bit as the weather turns cooler, but even the quickest glance at the DCNR Calendar of Events will show just how many chances we have to learn just a little any time we want to!

So this week, why not visit an outdoor classroom and let the environmental educators lead you on a new adventure of learning!

Riding the Chesapeake
When it comes to Riding with the Wind, it's hard to beat a boat on the Chesapeake. Lucky Marci!

If you've a story or a photo to share, send it to Pam for the website photo gallery or post it to the Facebook group. We love to hear about your adventures!

PPFF On the Move

Labor Day? No way! Well, yes. Way.

Pam's planning to bike to the Friends of Ohiopyle's Music in the Mountains (back after a one-year hiatus for construction of the new park visitors' center).

Marci's looking forward to a LONG training ride in preparation for #OSP2PSP and high school soccer season has begun so Go (Camp Hill) Lions!

Jen's mixing business and pleasure with a visit to the Nature Center at Pinchot, given that our Military & Families Appreciation Day is at the park next Saturday the 6th.

Yum!

Odd how so many of the offbeat holidays are food-related. Or is that we just tend to fixate on them?

Holiday weekend? Well, Saturday is Toasted Marshmallow Day and we all know what THAT means. And Sunday is Trail Mix Day, so why not whip up a concoction of your own and take it up to your favorite vista or streamside stroll? We have a REALLY simple mix in our Happiness Over a Flame free downloadable booklet on the website.

If you have one of your own to share, maybe it'll make the next version of the booklet.

Health Watch

Wake up! How many times have we heard it and said it? The start of a school year always means making difficult transitions to a new schedule but, let's face it, sleep is vital to our health and well-being. That's especially true for children - and learning. Research suggests that kids between the ages of 5 and 12 need 10 or 11 hours of sleep every night in order to be receptive to all the wonders that await them in a school day.

For a compelling look at the ways sleep can affect your child's health (as well as a lot of other neat information about children's health in general), check out the website of The Nemours Foundation's KidsHealth website (which is written, by the way, in a very gentle and child-friendly way).

Careful or you might learn something there, too!
