NEWS FROM THE JACKIE FACTORY

THE NEW SEASON, WITH DELIGHT

It's been ages since we've sent out a newsletter and a while since our last JACKIE FACTORY extravaganza, NIGHT OF 1000 STEVIES 24 on May 9. We're gearing up for Fall like its any other year, but it feels extra special this time. We welcome back our Empress, Chi Chi Valenti to her Regency producer's chair after an extended absence, and announce only good news: GHOSTLIGHT 4, our theatrical benefit for THE ACTOR'S FUND at the venerable, haunted GENE FRANKEL THEATER - a new Halloween tradition for the hometown crowd. We've also got first word of HAPPENING, a new East Village gallery/performance space/enclave which we're co-curating with HOWL ARTS. And finally, a new short feature by NEW YORK LIVES TV on DJ JOHNNY DYNELL.

We look forward to sharing lots of Enchanted Evenings (and a few late afternoons) with our longtime audience and new friends this Fall - see you there!

AN ACTORS FUND BENEFIT FOR HOWL HELP

Halloween elite team THE JACKIE FACTORY (Jackie 60, Night of 1000 Stevies) reunite with co-producer EDITRIX ABBY (Click + Drag, Burning Man) for the fourth annual GHOSTLIGHT, a Halloween theatrical and costume party benefitting the HOWL EMERGENCY LIFE PROJECT, the East Village wing of THE ACTORS FUND.

Set in the venerable and haunted GENE FRANKEL THEATRE on Bond Street, the show will once again star East Village performance icons and rising stars from our neighborhood. Our 2014 bill will be announced shortly after Labor Day: Last year's performers included JOEY ARIAS,a butoh KLAUS NOMI apparition by VANGELINE THEATER, AMBER MARTIN, Scream Queens DUELLING BANKHEADS (CLARK RENDER and DAVID ILKU), POISON EVE with SHREDDING WENCH FACTORY, HEATHER LITTEER and THE RACHEL KLEIN THEATER.  Once again GHOSTLIGHT producers CHI CHI VALENTI and EDITRIX ABBY are the Mistresses of Ceremonies and our legendary DJs will include JOHNNY DYNELL and SAMMY JO.

An annual fundraiser begun in 2011, GHOSTLIGHT celebrates East Village and Bowery theatrical traditions and ghosts of the past 150 years. The 2013 and 2014 venue, longtime home of East Village theatrical pioneer, director and acting teacher GENE FRANKEL, is an ideal setting for such a show. Frankel (who died in 2005) definitely haunts the premises, as well as various other apparitions from the Theatre's storied past. Winner of the first OBIE for direction in 1959, Gene Frankel's landmark 1961 production of JEAN GENET's play "THE BLACKS" launched the careers of JAMES EARL JONES, CICELY TYSON, LOUIS GOSSETT JR and MAYA ANGELOU, among others.  The 24 BOND STREET building, formerly a hat factory, speakeasy, and avant-garde jazz club in addition to the theatre, also housed the first studio of photographer ROBERT MAPPLETHORPE.

HOWL HELP (THE HOWL EMERGENCY LIFE PROJECT) was created to provide emergency financial assistance and social service support to New York City's East Village and Lower East Side besieged arts community. Administered by THE ACTORS FUND, HOWL HELP serves the needs of many artists, performers and support staff (of any generation) whose work challenges the boundaries of dance, theatre, music, multimedia and the spoken word. In 2013 and 2014, HOWL HELP hosted several OBAMACARE FOR ARTISTS workshops at St. Marks Church, helping hundreds of our community towards affordable health care.

Thanks to our generous sponsors, 100% of GHOSTLIGHT door proceeds
will benefit THE ACTOR'S FUND/HOWL HELP.

HAPPENING

A NEW EAST VILLAGE GALLERY AND PERFORMANCE SPACE
6 EAST FIRST STREET NYC
OPENING THIS FALL

To counter the oft-held belief that nothing non-commercial can survive in today's East Village, the HOWL ARTS collective began working on this new space in early Summer. The former LA MAMA GALLERIA at 6 East First Street is currently being transformed into HAPPENING.  The space is being redesigned to encourage fluid, cross-disciplinary performance in addition to the Visual Arts exhibitions.  Inspired by the Happenings held in Greenwich Village and the East Village from the late fifties through the late Sixties, the gallery's protaganists will encourage new hybrids and VERY local talent of all eras. JACKIE FACTORY and MOTHER NYC founder CHI CHI VALENTI is particularly intrigued by the Situationist possibilities inherent in such a setting.  She'll be curating Happenings along with BOB HOLMAN (BOWERY POETRY CLUB), HATTIE HATHAWAY (PYRAMID CLUB), NATHANIEL SIEGAL (POETRY PROJECT), BG BERLIN (CBGB) and more. Inspired by the late poet–philosopher Allen Ginsberg and best known for the annual HOWL FESTIVAL in Tompkins Square Park, HOWL ARTS has been dreaming of a full-time headquarters for several years and HAPPENING is a wonderful evolution.  The space is scheduled to open in early October. Stay Tuned..
