Scotland's first Climate Ready Biosphere
 The Galloway and Southern Ayrshire Biosphere Reserve is being supported by Adaptation Scotland to hold a series of events this autumn.
We will be looking at the impacts of a changing climate on the Biosphere Reserve and identifying actions that we could take to adapt – working towards a Climate Ready Biosphere.

Climate Ready Communities
 Adaptation Scotland is working in partnership with Planning Aid Scotland, greenspace scotland, CEMVO Scotland and Keep Scotland Beautiful to support communities to adapt to climate change.
Over the next few months we will be providing expert input and advice to support these organisations to further integrate climate resilience at the heart of engaging with communities.
We will also be learning valuable lessons from their experiences of engaging with communities and look forward to working together towards climate ready communities.

Values-based adaptation communications
 The second Adaptation Learning Exchange workshop takes place on Friday 12 September. Our ALE participants will share the work they have been doing around the themes of communications and climate change risk assessment, and will take part in a seminar on values-based adaptation communications run by the Climate Outreach and Information Network (COIN).
Our Adaptation Learning Exchange participants have set up a task group to address the challenge of assessing climate risk within their organisations and areas of influence . The group will be working in partnership with Adaptation Scotland to implement risk assessment processes and share lessons learned.

Adapting our Infrastructure to Cope with Climate Change
 Sniffer is organising a lecture for members of the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM) and the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE).
The lecture will feature talks from Adaptation Scotland, Transport Scotland and Scottish Water, and will take place on Tuesday 2 October at the Royal Society of Edinburgh. The lecture will be in three parts:
- the science and policy context for climate change adaptation;
- adapting Scotland’s transport systems to a changing climate; and
- securing a resilient service.

Glasgow appoints UK’s first chief resilience officer
 Glasgow City Council has appointed Alastair Brown as Chief Resilience Officer (CRO), a new position created to oversee the development and implementation of a resilience plan for the city.
Alistair will lead city-wide resilience building efforts to help prepare for, withstand and bounce back from catastrophic events and chronic stresses including the impacts of climate change.

Scotland's changing environment
 The 14 annual statistics for Scotland's environment has been published showing that our environment in general is in a good condition but environmental quality remains poor in some areas.
The statistics also show that seven of the ten warmest years recorded in Scotland have all occurred in the 21st century. Annual mean temperatures from 2000 - 2009 were 0.9C higher than the 1961-1990 average, the highest for any decade since records began in 1910.

Developing a circular economy
 A new report from the Environmental Audit Committee in Westminster is calling for lower VAT on recycled products, longer warranty periods for consumer goods and a ban on food waste being sent to landfill.
The aim is to help insulate the UK from rising resource prices by creating a more 'circular economy'.

 A new report from the Future Cities Catapult looks at the language we use to define 'smart cities' or 'sustainable cities'.
The report also looks at some of the challenges facing cities in the UK over the next decades.

Climate change damaging Europe's forests
 A report from the European Forest Institute shows that damage from wind, bark beetles, and wildfires has increased significantly in Europe’s forests in recent years.
The report published in the journal Nature Climate Change, also points to windthrow − the wind’s effect in damaging or uprooting trees − as an increasing problem.

New climate disaster fund
 A new $100 million fund aims to make people in disaster-prone regions of Asia and Africa better able to cope with natural disasters and crises
The Global Resilience Partnership (GRP) set up by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Rockefeller Foundation will focus on areas where the severity and frequency of typhoons, floods, earthquakes and drought is likely to increase as a result of a changing climate.
