What are you expecting?
August 2014 Newsletter
Dear <<First Name>>

What are we expecting?
We are expecting our first grandchild in September!  Mazel Tov!
On the 1st September we depart for South Africa, Ian for 4 weeks and Penny for 7 weeks. Megan our daughter who lives with us is already in South Africa with her pregnant sister Bronwyn  and her husband Chris. She will also stay with her brother Gareth who is getting married shortly to Liza. She left with extra luggage for the new baby as baby things are now cheaper in the UK than South Africa. There is much joy in the McDonald family at this time with the addition of a grandson, and a daughter-in-law and a teenager grandson. On the house front we have only had a couple come to view the house and another person cancelling their viewing. So it looks like the Lord is keeping us in this house for longer. We give thanks and praise to the Lord as we trust in Him.

We will be going into our ninth month of ministry in the Chorley area. It may be good to look back on what the Lord is birthing through the ministry in this area. Todate we have a well established and growing group of people in Chorley who regularly attend our weekly Bible studies and another one operating in Lancaster. We have started up a monthly afternoon Sabbath Celebration at the Chapel House in Chorley together with monthly  Sabbath prayer times in Lancaster while having monthly Shabbat fellowship meals both in Chorley and Lancaster. We have just held our second Shabbat gathering up in North Yorkshire with a wonderful group of people who are very keen to learn more about the Hebraic roots of Christianity. We are fully expectant for much fruit from all these gatherings as people are touched by the truth of Scripture and the Ruach HaKodesh reveals more of our Jewish Messiah.

'I have a Friend Who's Jewish, Do You?' is a book by Don Goldstein, a Messianic Rabbi we met in Florida, which we now have in stock for sale. It is a great book for evangelism as it answers many questions, both Jewish and non-Jewish people have about the Bible and life in general, while gently pointing them to our Jewish Messiah. We are selling them for £3-00 plus postage if you are interested especially in evangelism.

Over the last month we have had a major focus on what has been happening between Israel and Gaza and the whole of the Middle East. The lines seem to be drawing between those who have a heart for Israel and the Jewish people, and those who are against Israel and the Jewish people. It makes one think of Yeshua speaking about separating the sheep from the goats in Matthew 25. The sheep are those who have cared for the least of "my brethren" in verse 40. Who are Yeshua's brethren? The Greek word adelphos Strongs (G80) is defined as brother, belonging to the same people, fellow believer, etc. So first and foremost Yeshua is referring to His Jewish people. How we treat them leads to how we will be judged by our King Messiah! No way do I wish to be judged as a goat, but how many people (in the church) are heading down the route of being judged as goats is frightening. Many today are not taught what Scripture says about Israel. More people including those in the church believe the media more than God's Word.

We are having our third monthly Shabbat Celebration on Saturday 30 August in Chorley with a guest speaker who is on her way back to minister in Israel. On Thursday evening the 25 September  Mike Fryer from Father's House in North Wales  will come to share about Rosh Hashanah at the Chapel House in Chorley. This will be followed by a very special event the following month when the Sh'ma Dancers present the story of Israel in dance and drama on the evening of the 16 October on Simcha Torah at Emmaus Fellowship in Chorley. All are welcome to attend.

If anybody is interested in coming to the meeting could they please make contact so that we can give them the details of where we will be meeting or check events on our website.

The weekly Torah study evenings will continue while we are away with worship, prayer and study of  the weekly Parashah Torah and HavTorah readings together with the applicable readings from the Gospels and Epistles. Anyone is more than welcome to join us on a Thursday in Chorley or a Monday evening in Lancaster

Penny has done an article on Rosh HaShanah below and Ian  continues the Torah journey with the challenge "A Call to Holiness" in the sidebar below. We would welcome your comments on Face Book.

We would encourage you to visit our present website: www.alephomegaministries.com which continues to be developed.

Shalom in Yeshua

The Day of Remembering
Yom Ha-Zikaron or
Rosh HaShanah

In a few weeks time we are going to be celebrating one of God's Feasts that he gave to Moses to give to the Israelites.

Many people try to say that people who have accepted Yeshua as Messiah do not need to keep any of God's Feasts. If we read Romans 15:4 it says “ For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Tenach we might have hope.” Wow Shaul / Paul only had the Tenach /Old Testament, so are we prepared to learn from the past and what it all means? Yeshua said in Matthew 5:17 - 18 “Don't think that I have come to abolish the Torah and the Prophets. I have come not to abolish but to uphold. Yes indeed! I tell you that until heaven and earth pass away not so much as a yud or a stroke will pass from the Torah – not until everything that must happen has happened. So whoever disobeys these commands and teaches others to do so will be called the least in the Kingdom of Heaven. But whoever obeys them and so teaches will be called great in the Kingdom of Heaven.” Therefore as we learn and study Torah the 1st 5 books of the Bible we will begin to understand more about God's ways and the Feasts which God gave to all who believe in him for the Jew and the Gentile. For the Gentile who has been grafted into the Olive tree and the Jewish person it is not a salvation issue but a way of drawing closer to Almighty God.

This Feast has many different names the Feast of Trumpets or Rosh Hashanah (head of the year). Passover is the start of the religious year and Rosh Hashanah is the beginning of the civil year when the year changes. There are other names given to this Fifth Feast of the Lord's. The Day of Remembrance (Yom ha - Zikaron) or the Day of Blowing (Yom Teruach). It is understood to be the time when God had finished the creation of the world. Genesis 1:31 – 2:1 “ God saw everything that he had made, and indeed it was very good. So there was evening and morning , a sixth day. Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, along with everything in them.” It is also a time of looking at ones self, preparing for Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, the10th day of Tishri. Yom ha- Zikaron is when Jewish people remember that God is the Judge over everything and so man needs to look at his life and get it in right order. The shofar is blown, and apple and honey are eaten to symbolize completeness and to ask God for a sweet New Year.

We are told a number of times through out the Bible not to add to or remove from scripture what is written, so what can we learn about this Feast of the Lord.

The Feasts of the Lord are mentioned a number of times in Scripture. Yeshua celebrated them all, but we are going to look at Leviticus 23 and Numbers 29. Lets see what we can notice in Leviticus 23:23 -25. Both scriptures talk about it being a day of rest. No work is to be done and the English translations say blow the shofar. Do you notice something the Feast is not given a name. We see that Moses gives an understanding of the feasts but for this feast there is no understanding. Feast 1 & 2 are Passover and Unleavened Bread all about remembering leaving Egypt. Exodus 12. The 3rd Feast comes about as a time to remember that God brought the Israelites out of Egypt and into a new land where they would reap a harvest. Leviticus 23:10  Feast 4 is Shavuot celebrating the harvest. Exodus 23:16 and Leviticus 23:22.  Feast 6 is Yom Kippur, the day of redemption for Israel Leviticus 16 :23 -28 &23: 26 -31. Finally the 7th Feast Sukkot Leviticus 23:39 and Deuteronomy 16:13 -15 This is a celebration of the final harvests and a time to remember living in booths in the desert. Leviticus 23:42.

So Feast 5 has no name and in fact no meaning. Lets look at what we can find out. It states in English it is to be a day of rest but to hold an assembly commemorating a shouting or blowing, a holy convocation. The Hebrew word used for commemorating is “ZIKRON” with the root being “Zakar” which means to call to mind, to remember. This is why it is called Yom ha Zikaron. But nowhere does it say that Moses called it by this name.. The English translations often say that the day was to be remembered with trumpets blown so it has been given the name of Feast of Trumpets as well , but is the word for trumpet used here. Lets look further at Leviticus 23 and Numbers 29 and see what the Hebrew says. The word used in the text is “teruah”. Looking up and investigating I have found that there are three words often translated as trumpet. 1St word “Chatsots” (Hosea 5:8) 2nd word “Shofar” Exodus 19:16 And finally “Yowbel” Exodus 19:13 None of these words are used in the text so does it say to blow a trumpet or shofar. What it says is the the people are to “TERUAH” on this day. Teruah comes from the root word rua Strongs 8643/ TWOT2135b to shout, to sound the battle cry. A few commentaries state that the word could be used to mean a blast using an instrument. If we look at Joshua 6:16 the words shofar and rua are used to tell us about the Jericho walls coming down. The writer says”and it came to pass, at the 7th time when the priests have blown with the shofar and Joshua said unto the people rua shout. A note of interest, according to scripture only the priests carried and blew the shofar the people shouted (rua or teruah). Women did not blow the shofar. In Numbers 23:21 teruah is translated “so shout” 2 Samuel 6:15 both words are used when the people teruah and blew the shofar. As I looked through scripture 95% of the time rua /teruah are used for shouting whereas shofar or yowbel is used for trumpet, shofar or ram's horn. Why am I looking at this well I believe God is saying something to us. Could it be about the future, as we need to remember that the new is hidden in the old. If we do a search in the New Testament we will find that in 1 Thessalonians 4:16 we read that “The Lord himself will come down from heaven with a rousing cry, (teruah) with a call (rua) from one of the ruling angels, and with God's shofar, those who died united with the Messiah will be the first to rise.

Is Yom Teruah connected. When Messiah comes for his bride we see a connection between the ancient Jewish wedding feast as well. The bridegroom has the shofar blown and shouts that he is on his way to collect his bride who knows she has to be ready and waiting as she did not know when her bridegroom was coming for her. I have a feeling that at Yom Teruah / Rosh Hashanah The Day of Shouting or Blowing of Trumpets is connected to when the Lord comes back both as Bridegroom and King of kings. What do you think?

Until next time have a blessed time and keep looking up for the King.

Prayer needs:

* Pray for Jewish people as we enter into this time of Elul in preparation for the holiest time of the year starting with Yom Teruach building up to Yom Kippur and ending with the Wedding Feast that they would see their Messiah.
* Pray for the church that there would be a turning away from Replacement Theology and a turning back to God's Word as contained in the Torah.
* We give thanks to the Lord for how He is moving in peoples lives who are involved in this movement.
* Pray for Beit Echad and for the groups while we are away.
* Please pray for us while we are in South Africa and for these significant events in our children's lives, for their spouses and children.
* Penny and I give thanks to the Lord for supplying all our needs through the generous giving of those amongst you. We are humbled.

A Call to Holiness (Sanctification)

What is holiness?
The word holy in Hebrew is kadosh  and it has the primary idea of cutting off, separation or set apart. In the New Testament the Greek word hagios  has come to include purity, especially relating to ethical holiness. Just as a man is a triune being, holiness can be manifest in the physical/ceremonial, ethical/emotional and spiritual holiness.

Physical and Ceremonial Holiness
In the previous article 'Are Christians required to keep Kosher?' holiness and food seem to be linked in Leviticus 11. “Be holy for I am holy” as quoted (Lev 11: ;19:1; 20:7; 1Pet 1:16) is a call by God for man to reflect the Divine nature. The Hebrew language is very down to earth and concrete, taking what is physical and giving it deeper meaning and significance. The most basic physical human need is food. Here God separates what animals are clean from those which bring defilement and the loss of holiness. As we are obedient in this most basic drive we learn to be obedient in controlling other basic drives like the sexual drive to keep holy!

We can see this significance in the physical realm where objects are set apart to be holy, as with the items in the Tabernacle and Temple that all have great spiritual importance. So just as we are called to keep food clean, so we are to keep all other areas of our lives clean. As we walk in physical cleanness we are set apart from the rest of the world.

This applied to the Levites and the Nazirites being set apart for service to the Lord. The whole of Israel, the Land and the Jewish people were to be set apart as holy to the Lord. To maintain this separation they had to keep from any defilement as defined in the Torah. What clothing they wore, what food and drink they had and how they behaved all had an impact on holiness. What we do in the physical has an impact on the soul and spirit of man. The separation of man from what defiles ceremonially is but typical of the holiness that is also ethical and spiritual.

Sadly, the New Testament has been understood as a purely Greek document and interpreted with a Greek world view by much of the church. This has led to a dualistic view of the Scriptures where the physical has been separated from the spiritual. This has lead to the physical requirements of the Torah having been ignored and only the ethical requirements been upheld such as the 10 Commandments (excluding the 4th commandment).

Ethical Holiness
“Be holy for I am holy” plainly implies an ethical conception. In Mark 7:19-23 Yeshua says, This is because it does not enter into his heart, but into the belly, and goes out into the waste-bowl, purging all the foods. And He said, That passing out of the man, it is the thing that defiles the man. For from within, out of the heart of men, pass out the evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, thefts, greedy desires, iniquities, deceit, lustful desires, a wicked eye, blasphemy, pride, recklessness. All these evil things pass out from within and defile the man. (LITV). It is what enters the heart of man that defiles. So we need to guard our hearts and minds in Yeshua by the power of the Holy Spirit. Notice Yeshua includes greedy desires in this list which relates directly with the flesh and to what we eat. Food is what led Adam and Eve to sin and loose their place of being holy!

God does not want us to conform to the ways of the world (Rom 12:2), but to conform to the image of His Son (Rom 8:29) by obeying His mitzvot, commandments as given in His Word. In Yeshua's prayer in John 17:16-17 He says, They are not of this world just as I AM not of this world. You must now make them holy (hagiazo) by means of the truth: Your Word is truth” (One New Man Bible). The Torah is TRUTH and even the food regulations are truth.

Ethical and Spiritual Holiness
God is distinctly different from His creation and His call is for men and women to resemble Him in His holiness. His essential attributes besides holiness are love and justice. This is summed up in the two greatest commandments to love God and one another. How are we to obey this in our every day lives? Moses in Deuteronomy 16:20 states “Tzedek tzedek tirdof” - "Justice justice you shall pursue". Another way to translate this sentence is “Righteousness, righteousness you shall pursue”. The repeating of the first word is made for emphasis and may be to show that we must be righteous towards God and righteous towards man. This is a call to go beyond just following the letter of the Torah but the spirit. As Yeshua stated in Mat 5:40 -42 “And if anyone would sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. And if anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. Give to the one who begs from you, and do not refuse the one who would borrow from you. We are to pursue right ritual and right relations. This means approaching God in the right way with a humble and contrite heart. The way we relate to our neighbour then needs to reflect this humility in all our dealings with one another. This is reflected in the story of a man coming up to his rabbi and asking if milk could be used in place of wine for the Shabbat meal. The rabbi responds by giving him $200 and tells him to have a good Shabbat meal with his family. The students of the rabbi are amazed and ask the rabbi why he gave some much. The rabbi says that if the man could not afford wine for Shabbat, he could not afford meat for his family.

In Summary

This is all part of our journey to holiness that makes one different from those who are not in the Kingdom of God. As David Pawson has stated in Unlocking The Bible , “If God saves you He expects you to be like Him; He expects you to live His way and to be holy as He is Holy.”
