CodeNow Wraps Up Coast-to-Coast Summer Workshops

CodeNow is thrilled to announce the conclusion of a phenomenal series of workshops this summer! More than 100 students completed our programs in NYC, SF and Miami  with the support of 28 volunteer trainers, all of whom are professional engineers from top tech companies like Facebook and AirBnB.

With workshops on both coasts, it was a busy but impactful season. This summer we tested out the new training model developed during our participation in Y Combinator earlier this year.  We also  expanded to Miami, thanks to the generous support of the Knight Foundation. In 2014 we have already worked with twice as many students as we did all of last year - and it’s not even September yet!

Stats for 2014

  • Number of students reached 325

  • 51% of our students were young women

  • 73% of our students received free or reduced lunch

  • 99% of students expressed satisfaction with the program

  • 83% of students are considering studying computers science in college

Here’s what some of out students had to say:

"My favorite part of the weekend was when I got into the groove of coding. CodeNow drew me in and a few days later I just came to a conclusion that I was falling in love with coding." - Liliana, 11th grade

“I expected it to be much more complicated and boring but it turned out to be easy and fun actually.” -Alberto, 12th grade

"My favorite part of the weekend was being able to use code and make the computer create something. I also liked the fact that we had small groups so I was able get certain things explained to me right away." -Yohely, 10th grade

In the spring we conducted a survey of our alumni about to enter or currently in college,  48% indicated that they were majoring or planning to major in a Computer Science or a related field. (i.e., Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Information Systems). We are excited to know our program is making an impact on the lives of our students.  Learning to code is one of the most important skills that can allow students to create a better life for themselves. We have exciting news coming, stay tuned for updates this fall!
