                                                                                                   October 2014

There's a little nip in the air as we drift into fall. There's still plenty of time for most outdoor activities, but we'd be totally okay with you wanting to grab a good book, find a cozy spot indoors and read, read, read.

What's that you say? Nothing to read? Stop by the library or come to the Red Hook Rotary's giant book sale from 10 to 4 on Saturday, October 25. The Rotary is holding the sale to benefit the early literacy programs at the library.

To make it a success, we'll need great donations. If you have gently used books you're willing to part with, bring them to the library from 10 to 2 Saturday, October 4, 11 and 18th. (No textbooks, encyclopedias or magazines please.) We promise to find them a good new home!

This month is packed with things to do at the library, from author talks to our annual Monster Mash, so read on.

Please forward this newsletter to family and friends who might like to know what's going on here at the ol' Octagon
Red Hook Public Library, that is.

This & That

Geek the Library

Our Geek the Library program got off to a rousing start on Hardscrabble Day. What is Geek the Library? It's a public awareness campaign to get people talking about what they "geek," in this case, used as a verb to indicate passion or interest. Everyone geeks something. We're here to help connect you to what you geek!

During Hardscrabble Day, hundreds of people strolling by took a moment to let the library know what they "geek" on our tablet, filling four large sheets.

Nearly 50 people had their portraits taken to be put into cool posters like the one here showing author Jack Kelly.

Come by the library if you'd like to participate. We're still taking pictures, and we want to know what you geek. We geek our patrons!

Geek Sheets: People sure have lots of interests

New Library Staff

There have been a lot of changes at the library lately. As our veteran team members adjust their schedules to fit with family and other responsibilities, and our pages leave for college, you'll notice some new part-time faces. Come on in and say hi!

Paul may be a new face in Red Hook, but he brings years of experience to the counter.

We're sharing his talents with the Hyde Park Library. He's a whiz with technology, a super-nice guy and he's tall enough to reach the tops of our shelves!

Fiona is also familiar with the ol' Octagon, having interned here last summer while a Bard student. The recent grad also works in Bard's library, as well as freelancing as a journalist.

Christian has risen from our volunteer ranks to become our newest page and Teen Tech.

He's a great addition to the Red Hook team, and along with Paul, vastly increases our overall height.

BOB Team Takes First Place

Woohoo! Red Hook Public Library's Battle of the Books team, known as Re(a)d, came home with first place in the BOB competition at Columbia-Greene Community College, on Saturday, September 6. Re(a)d went undefeated against the teams from Kingston, Beekman, Beacon, Clinton, Kinderhook and Staatsburg libraries in a double elimination bracket system.

Twenty-two teams from 23 libraries competed in the 10th annual competition for students entering 6th through 9th grade in the 2014-2015 school year. Participants read eight books over the summer and were asked numerous questions regarding the books.

Visit the library to see the first place trophy and banner, which are on display here until the 2015 Battle of the Books
.

Well done, Re(a)d, and props to team coach Lisa Mollica and pages Allix Coon and Elizabeth Ricci.

Cut & Save

The initial meeting of the new Dollars & $ense group was held on Tuesday, September 16. Participants were very busy clipping coupons and trading thrifty secrets. So much so, that they need more time and will continue to meet every other Tuesday at 6 p.m. The group will meet in October on the 14th and 28th.

Mahjongg Fever Hits Library

East meets west in the library's Tween Room for Mahjongg. Interested? Mahjonggers meet Fridays at 1 p.m. If you want to learn, come by -- there's someone to teach you the intricacies of this fun game.

Banned Books Week

Did you read a banned book for Banned Books Week (Sept. 21 -27)? Along with decorating our mantel, the library celebrated with libraries nationwide the freedom to read books—even ones like that nasty Pulitzer Prize-winning To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee—that have been challenged throughout the years in many locales.

RHPL at Hardscrabble Day

BOB team members march in the parade

Hardscrabble Day is one of our favorite days all year. This year, like in the past, we had a full slate of activities on Saturday, September 20. Staff and volunteers, including members of our Friends, helped out with crafts, a raffle, a plant sale, launched the Geek the Library program and marched in the parade. Check out our Facebook page for more photos.

A Fairy Thank You

We received a thank-you note to the boys and girls who constructed brand new houses for the fairies residing in the area. The note just appeared the other day as if by magic. It arrived by special delivery—and we do mean special.

Sealing the Deal

Susan Rohrmeier and Jeff Crane (pictured) with help from Susan's son, Evan, took advantage of a beautiful Saturday to apply sealant to the garden mural they created last year. The art work is now well protected.

AmazonSmile Donation Program

Have you heard about Amazon's Smile donation program? You can shop Amazon and donate to a favorite not-for-profit cause. We bring this up because one cause included in the program is the Friends of the Red Hook Public Library. It isn't much, but every little bit helps. Click on the logo above to take you to the AmazonSmile web page to check it out.

Buster the Literacy Dog

Meet Buster, Certified Therapy Dog and our new Literacy Dog!

Studies show that hesitant readers are more comfortable reading to a non-judgmental pet than to a parent or teacher. That’s where Buster comes in. He is gentle, patient and, let’s face it, irresistibly cute.

He and his trainer Barbara (pictured here with Buster) will be here for a meet & greet open introduction at 5 p.m. on Tuesday October 7. We’re now taking appointments for one-on-one 20-minute sessions to start October 21.

Please call the library or stop in to make an appointment.

Guillermo Fesser

Next up is Guillermo Fesser, whose book One Hundred Miles from Manhattan is about his experience moving with his family from Madrid, Spain to the Village of Rhinebeck. You’ll recognize many people and places in his narrative. But more than that, his is a fresh and objective take on just what it means to be American, especially in a small town. Mr. Fesser will be with us 6 p.m., Thursday, October 9 at the library.

Joseph Luzzi

But wait, there’s more! For those of you enamored with all things Italian, we have local author Joseph Luzzi. He will be with us 6 p.m., Thursday, October 16 at the library, to discuss his book, My Two Italies, which examines Italian identity and the dual nature of Italian heritage. With passages NPR calls “heartbreakingly tender” within this “elegant and thoughtful” work, you won’t want to miss this unusual opportunity.

New On Our Shelves

Here are just a few suggestions of new titles we have for you. Click on the images to take you to our online catalog records.

Adult Fiction

The extraordinary new Lucas Davenport thriller from #1 New York Times-bestselling author and Pulitzer Prize winner John Sandford. Lucas Davenport investigates the discovery of several bodies in an abandoned Minnesota farmyard, discovering the work of a local serial killer who has been murdering one victim every summer for years.

Nonfiction

A major book about the future of the world, blending intellectual and natural history and field reporting into a powerful account of the mass extinction unfolding before our eyes. Draws on the work of geologists, botanists, marine biologists, and other researchers to discuss the five devastating mass extinctions on Earth and predicts the coming of a sixth. (Staff recommended)

Children

Everybody has a favorite animal. Some like little white dogs or big black cats or hoppy brown bunnies best. Others prefer squishy snails or tall giraffes or sleek black panthers. Fourteen
children's book artists share their favorite animals and why they love them.

Tweens

This much-anticipated follow-up to Jonathan Auxier's exceptional debut, Peter Nimble and His Fantastic Eyes, is a Victorian ghost story with shades of Washington Irving and Henry James. More than just a spooky tale, it's also a moral fable about human greed and the power of storytelling.

Teens

Amy Gumm, the other girl from Kansas, has been recruited by the Revolutionary Order of the Wicked to stop Dorothy who has found a way to come back to Oz, seizing a power that has gone to her head -- so now no one is safe!

Spinning Yarns Knitters

Sponsored by the library, Spinning Yarns is the knitting group that meets at 4 pm Wednesdays upstairs in the library.

Bring your latest project and join us at any time. Not working on a project right now? We are always collecting chemo caps and lap blankets for the Infusion Centre at Benedictine Hospital.

Do not know how to knit or crochet? Not a problem – we will teach you. All levels of experience welcomed.
