Welcome Back-to-School BOOSTers,
What an exciting time of year! We know that setting the tone and expectations from day one is important especially after school when you have dozens, sometimes hundreds of students, during whole group or small group activities. Some of the questions we like to pose to after school leaders in our trainings are below and we hope they can be helpful to you as you move forward with your team to establish guidelines and expectations.
What are your expectations during group work to ensure students are on task?
What incentives/reinforcements are in place for group as a whole?
How do you establish what the acceptable noise level is?
How do you communicate with classroom teachers? Parents?
What is the practice for the students finishing homework early?

Program Highlight: Cheers for Children
The President of First Star, academic and Hollywood producer Peter Samuelson, co-founded the charity with Washington lawyer and lifelong child advocate Sherry Quirk. First Star believes that every child deserves their chance of attaining the American Dream. As Peter says, “We are privileged to work for all our children in First Star, children whose needs are the quintessence of all that we prize and seek to nurture. Because kids are our only future. They are our aspiration, and our motivation to improve our civilization. They represent hope itself. We cannot fail them.”
The First Star Academies are a national academic and enrichment program for high-school aged foster youth. Each Academy is operated and managed independently by a leading 4-year university, on its campus. The program, initiated at UCLA in the summer of 2011, has seen tremendous success and has expanded nationwide to include over 150
students total at the University of Rhode Island, University of Connecticut and the George Washington University in D.C. First Star continues to expand to other universities and consult with national experts to create a well-planned program that will
mold the necessary professional guidance that these foster youth deserve.

Rob Travaglini leads the work of the National Center on Time & Learning (NCTL) in Connecticut, dedicated to expanding learning time to improve student achievement and enable a well-rounded education. Through research, public policy and technical assistance, as a Senior Director he supports state and local initiatives that add significantly more school time for academic and enrichment opportunities to help children meet the demands of the 21st century.
Today the achievement gap between high-poverty and non-poverty students is more than twice as large as the gap between black and white students. Connecticut remains a state that, while boasting the highest per capita income in the nation statewide with 15 percent of its children living in poverty, continues to have disproportionate income and opportunity gaps in its cities. The consequences for Connecticut’s urban children are severe.
The Connecticut State Department of Education has been a leader in leveraging new flexibilities in federal funding streams with state and local sources to finance the additional time. Thanks to Rob’s efforts, schools are utilizing innovative approaches to staffing their expanded days through such strategies as staggering teachers schedules and creating robust partnerships with locally-based community organizations that are integrated throughout the school day.
Today through his work, Rob has helped many students get the high-quality education they deserve through expanded learning time and continues to push efforts to broaden and deepen work with schools, districts, and state partners in Connecticut to dramatically increase the number of students benefitting from high-quality expanded learning time.

The Chisomo Idea is an organization that provides mentorship and afterschool programs to youth in the village of Chinsapo. In the country of Malawi, some of the schools have a teacher-student ratio of 1 to 200. As you can imagine, many students need additional help to pass their exams and continue moving forward in school.
The Chisomo Idea Team is made up of VOLUNTEER young adults passionate about making a difference in the lives of students through soccer and a Saturday street school.
Apply for this grant to hold your own Teens Teaching Tech program in your community. "Teens Teaching Tech" is a workshop series designed to provide older adults with one-on-one support with their modern devices from teens in the community to foster and cultivate intergenerational relationships.
The Finish Line Youth Foundation provides funding to organizations that youth athletic programs and sports-based camps, especially those serving disadvantaged and special needs children.
Do you know a modern-day da Vinci? Children age 9 to 16 are invited to imagine and describe a helicopter of the future. First prize is $1,000 and a trip to the Sikorsky headquarters in Stratford, CT.
Do you have an idea for a school/community native plant garden, a forest improvement project, a streamside restoration plan, a recycling program, or energy conservation project for your students? Need funds to implement it? Apply for a Project Learning Tree GreenWorks! grant.
The organizations are calling on schools and youth groups to submit chronicles of their garden projects in a race to win a $500 prize. The award is designed to support the continued sustainability of an exceptional youth garden program that has demonstrated success, and has impacted the lives of kids and their community.
For educators who need assistance to further their program goals, the P. Buckley Moss Foundation for Children’s Education has grants available for up to $1,000 to be awarded in 2014 with the grant monies to be used in 2015 programs.
The Charlotte Martin Foundation is a private, independent foundation dedicated to enriching the lives of youth in the areas of athletics, culture, and education and also to preserving and protecting wildlife and habitat. Our two areas of focus – youth and wildlife – were established by our founder, Charlotte Yeoman Martin, during her lifetime, and continue today as a legacy to her generosity.
Currently, there is little consensus on how to objectively measure imagination. To achieve its mission, the Imagination Institute is holding a grants competition and a series of events to lay the foundation for the long-term development of an "Imagination Quotient" and how to build imagination.
