What's AIC Membership To You?
We want to hear what membership in AIC means to you. This month we heard from Mike Golden, FAIC, CPC.

I have been a member of AIC since October 2, 1972, when I joined as a student member.
My department head, M.I. Guest had come in to the senior class and made a definitive statement that "if you are interested in being a professional in this industry, AIC was an organization you needed to join."
I have progressed from a student member to a Constructor Member to a Fellow of AIC. I also am Certified Professional Constructor #10.
All of us have an obligation to promote professionalism and ethics within our industry and to continuously pursue educational advancement within our industry. AIC provides the opportunity to promote these ideals with like-minded individuals. Since the advent of the certification program in 1996, there is a definite measurable level of certification of the professional constructor that is unique to our industry.
Having been a member of AIC for almost 42 years, I recommend it to all individuals within our industry that believe in professionalism, ethics and continuing education.

Where are all the Women CPCs?

Being a Certified Professional Constructor, or CPC, is one of the highest levels of professional achievement in the construction industry. Sundt employs more CPCs than any other U.S. contractor. And here’s another amazing fact: a quarter of all of the women who are CPCs in the world work at Sundt. Both of these figures are testaments to our commitment to employing the most talented workforce in the industry, and helping women achieve success in a field that has been historically male-dominated.

The AIC is the national qualifying body for the CPC designation through its Constructor Certification Commission.

FMI 2014 NRCI 3rd Quarter Report
NRCI Index Q3= 62.5
The NRCI dropped 3.3 points this quarter to 62.5, thus breaking the short run of solid advance in the previous two quarters. At first glance, one would say this is not good news. Although we prefer to see a constant rise in the Index, we note that a score of 62.5 is 2.2 points better than the one in Q3 2013. The NRCI is also still solidly in the growth range between 50 and 100. Although most components of the NRCI dropped this quarter, backlogs remain strong with expectations of improvement and productivity up a little. The signs of change are in the details, with the cost of materials continuing to climb and the cost of labor moving up sharply, both components weigh negatively on the Index. In the near term, higher costs of production will not contractors improve profitability. However, these components are also signs of a growing economy as manufacturers see higher utilization rates, and unemployment drops closer to full employment levels, thus pushing wages up. Mr. Ethics
Dear Mr. Ethics,
An employee recently told me about a video that that is on YouTube. The video shows some of our workers sitting on the roof of a condo project we have in lawn chairs, drinking beer and lighting off bottle rockets. If I caught these employees in the act they all would be fired. Since this is on YouTube I do not think I can take any action because I did not witness it live. I do not feel I can use this video against them. Regards, YouTube or Live

Dear YouTubed,
The YouTube video is just as good as catching them in the act. There is not right of privacy that attaches to pictures or videos placed on public, social sites. There placing a video on You Tube makes their actions even worse. It shows your employees acting recklessly and improperly. And it is for the whole world to see including OSHA and other government agencies. Do not worry about taking actions against these employees because you did not catch them, live, in the act. There are no adverse ethical issues involved with acting upon the video.

Call for Papers - AIC Annual Forum 2015
The Professional Constructor, the journal of the American Institute of Constructors (AIC), is seeking submissions for a special issue “Lean and Green Construction Project Management Practicesâ€. Authors are invited to submit a manuscript for consideration in this special issue that deal with “Lean and Green†issues relevant to the practicing profession. The submissions will be reviewed by members of the Journal’s review committee. Out of the approved submissions for the special issue, one will be selected by the AIC’s Education Committee and Executive Board to be presented (expenses paid) at the AIC’s annual forum in Fort Worth, TX on April 13-16, 2015.

2014 AIC Mid-Year Meeting
The 2014 AIC Mid-Year Meeting is October 15 & 16 in Arlington, VA. The Mid-Year Meeting is an event geared toward providing AIC Members a platform for getting involved with the AIC at a volunteer level. Those interested in leadership roles or participating on an AIC Committee should consider attending. In addition, the AIC hosts the Annual Inter-Industry Roundtable and Reception.
Last year, over 12 AEC Industry Associations participated in high level discussions surrounding issues affecting their industries and organizations. Following the Roundtable is a Reception which allows AIC Members a chance to network with other association leaders after a productive day of meetings.
