Conservative Care First! #NCHM

Hosted by the American Chiropractic Association (ACA), National Chiropractic Health Month (NCHM) is a national public awareness and education campaign held each October. NCHM strives to teach health care consumers about the benefits of chiropractic services and to promote the expertise of doctors of chiropractic (DCs) in helping their patients reach optimal levels of health and wellness.

In 2014, NCHM will use the theme “Conservative Care First!” to educate the public on why a conservative approach to pain management and health enhancement is both sensible and effective. For years, many patients would find relief through conservative forms of care such as chiropractic services only after unsuccessfully trying a range of other, more complex and riskier treatments. Today, that approach has been reversed, with more medical research and guidelines supporting the idea that patients should exhaust conservative approaches to pain management before moving on to other options.

A Quiet Health Care Revolution

It’s just becoming audible now, but the stirrings are significant.

A grassroots transformation in health is underway.  It’s driven, largely, by these stark facts: nearly two-thirds of Americans are overweight or obese…tens of millions are afflicted by chronic conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes…and 70% of us report suffering from stress (which itself can lead to such problems as heart disease and depression).  At the grassroots, though, 40% of Americans are taking greater control of their health by using holistic medicine.  And, a small but growing number are seeking care from the “general practitioners of holistic medicine” known as naturopathic physicians.

This movement is reflected at the national level.  One year ago, the US Senate unanimously approved a resolution to establish Naturopathic Medicine Week.  Congress thereby recognized the ability of naturopathic physicians to “provide safe, effective, and affordable health care” and urged Americans to learn more about this form of medicine.  So, the second week of October is a good time to visit a naturopathic doctor (ND) and size up whether her or his approach is potentially a fit for you.

Common Strength Training Myths

Spot Reduction: (Fat loss can be isolated to a particular area of the body)
The reality is that if you have fat on your tummy, for example, doing sit ups is not going to give you a six pack. While doing hundreds of sit ups a day will indeed build strong abs, it will do nothing to reduce the fat in that area alone. Fat loss can only be achieved in all areas of your body at once, and it can only be achieved by burning more calories than you ingest, and you burn calories most effectively by building muscle. In fact, working your thighs or shoulders will do as much, probably more, than sit ups to make you lose fat on your belly (and everywhere else), since they are bigger muscle groups.

Muscles Can Turn Into Fat:
Fat cells and muscles perform completely different and separate functions, and one will never transform into the other. When someone becomes “soft” and overweight after being “hard” and muscular, it is because the calorie output no longer exceeds the calorie intake. Largely, this is due to a decreased metabolic rate from the loss of muscle. The loss of muscle is caused by the lack of necessary stimulus. There is no magical transformation of muscle into fat, just a loss of muscle mass and an increase in body fat.

What Is ATMAT?

The Arvigo Technique of Maya Abdominal Therapy™ is founded on the ancient Mayan technique of abdominal massage, which is an external non invasive manipulation that repositions internal organs that have shifted, combined with the modern science of anatomy and physiology.  ATMAT supports the body’s natural healing capacity to maintain homeostasis, hemodyanmics, and increases the five channels of flow (arterial, venous, lymphatic, nerves, chi/energy).

ATMAT is specifically beneficial to the digestive system, the reproductive system, and for bladder health. There’s always the question, “well is it good for _____?”.  The answer usually is yes, as ANYTHING that falls under any of the previous categories can benefit, plus more! Just in case you’re still wondering, the following are lists of conditions that this work is great for:
