Worship

August 31 - "Growing in Generosity," Mary Ellen Mogee
- One service at 10am

For many of us, some of the greatest opportunities for personal growth involve becoming more open-hearted and open-handed, that is, more generous.  This service will discuss generosity—in its many expressions, not just financial generosity--as a path toward wholeness and maturity, and as a spiritual practice.

Lifespan Faith Development

Adult Faith Development Class: "Build Your Own Theology"

Tuesday evenings: September 9, 16, 23, 30; 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. in the UUCR Board Room

Led by Rev. Barbara Coeyman

What are you, theologically? --- Buddhist, Christian, Atheist, Pagan, Jewish, Humanist, Agnostic, or more? In Unitarian Universalism we are encouraged to define our own personal theological path, while respecting the particular paths of everyone else in our community: a very personal yet also very community-oriented way of doing church. This curriculum --- ‘BYOT’ --- has become a standard in Unitarian Universalist adult education. Written by the Rev. Richard Gilbert, now retired minister in Rochester, NY, this course provides guidance for clarifying your own theological path. No previous study in theology required. Open to members and friends of UUCR. The curriculum may be purchased from the UUA bookstore (go to www.uua.org) but it is not required.

Advanced sign-up required by Sunday September 7
  • Sign up at Sign-Up Corner next to name tags in foyer
  • Send an email to admin@uureston.org.
For more information contact Rev. Barbara at minister@uureston.org

Our DLFD has a new email address!

Courtney Wilson, our Director of Lifespan Faith Development, can now be reached at dlfd@uureston.org! Many thanks to Tim Kelly for his long-distance efforts in making this happen!

All Church Lunch on September 7th

After our in-gathering service on 7 September, we will have an all-church lunch.  This will be a potluck affair, and we are hoping everyone will bring something to share.  As we have done in the past, please look at the list below, and bring whatever your last name dictates, or if you want to be a rebel, bring whatever you like.  Just let Samantha, our office administrator, know that you are coming and what you are bringing  (admin@uureston.org or 703-956-9155).  We will need everyone to help with set-up and clean-up, so please plan to share the work of your hands.
  • A-F    salad or side dish
  • G-M  dessert or fruit
  • N-R   main course dish that serves 4 (meat, fish, or vegetarian)
  • S-Z     drinks or antipasto (appetizer) including cheese and crackers, olives, other snacks
We look forward to seeing you at our celebration of community for the beginning of our new church year!  For more information, please contact Kathy Deligianis at kduucr@tuxers.net.

JPD NOVA News

JPD NOVA Cluster Meeting - Volunteers Needed!

On Saturday, September 13, from 10 AM to 2 PM, UUCR will host the JPD NOVA Cluster meeting of the ten congregations of the NOVA Cluster. (See http://www.uureston.org/national-regional-affiliations/ for details.)  We will need some volunteers to cook, setup, welcome those visiting, serve lunch, and clean up.  This is a new ministry formed by Joseph Priestly District to develop synergy among congregations clustered in nearby regional areas.  We are hoping some of you can help support this effort.  Please contact Cecile Batchelor (cbatchel@comcast.net or 703-471-7568) if you are interested in radical hospitality!

Listening Circle Interest Meeting

Sunday, September 14th

Interested in joining a Listening Circle?  Previously known as Covenant Groups, members meet once a month and discuss spiritual, emotional, religious, and intellectual topics in a spirit of open communication.  If you are currently in a group or are looking to join one, please join us for an informal meeting after the worship service on September 14th.  Hopefully, attendees will be able to get a taste of the type of fulfillment created by being a part of one of these groups, along with getting some answers to some questions.  Both current and interested members are encouraged to come.

In Search of:

A “co-chair” for the Alternative Gift Market planning committee with the intent of becoming the chair for planning the 2015 market.

I have chaired the Alternative Gift Market for the past 7 years and while I will continue to be involved, this will be the last year that I will chair the effort.    There is an active committee of helpers, but no one has expressed an interest in chairing the activity.  This is an opportunity to learn the process.
This year’s event will be UUCR’s 14th year hosting the market. It is an important source of funds for local non-profits as well as global ones.  Our Alternative Gift Market began in 2001, raising just under $17,000 and has grown to raising just under $33,000 last year.
Planning for this year’s market will begin in September.    Please contact me if you have any questions or are interested in taking on this important function.

Weekly Spiritual Practice

Mindfulness Meditation: Sundays, 9:15am

Please join Steve Zappalla and Martha Patterson for a mindfulness meditation session.  The group meets in the Library downstairs at 9:15am. The session lasts about 30 minutes and includes a 15 minute guided meditation.

Knitters - Tuesdays, 10:00am

The UUCR Knitting Circle meets every Tuesday morning from 10 am to noon in the UUCR Library.  Although we call ourselves Knitters, all forms of needlecraft are welcome.  Bring your own project or use our yarn to make a blanket square.  No previous experience required - we can teach you!  Come enjoy conversation and experience the soothing powers of knitting. For those who can't come during the day we are trying to form a monthly evening or weekend group.  If you are interested please contact Kathy Deligianis - kathyd@tuxers.net.

Social Events

Join JULIETs on Labor Day in the Reston Town Center

Are you a woman who loves Shakespeare? Or at least great food and conversation with like-minded women from UUCR and the community? Next week, Labor Day, please join us for happy hour specials at Big Bowl in the Reston Town Center (11915 Democracy Drive) from 5-7 PM. Great food and drink at affordable prices, plus wonderful conversation with members of UUCR's JULIETs (Just Us Ladies Imbibing Eating & Talking). If you plan to attend, in order to hold a table of the proper dimensions, please confirm with Annie Simpson at as6699@hotmail.com. See you there!

The Closet needs volunteers!

Saturday, September 20, will be the conclusion of the spring/summer season at The Closet.

The Closet’s manager, Aaron Sawyer, will be looking for volunteers from 8-4 on Monday-Friday, September 22-26. If you have some free time during that week, please think of The Closet. It takes a lot of people to transform the store at these seasonal changeovers, and your help will be much appreciated. In general, Monday is spent packing up the summer items, Tuesday and Wednesday are spent putting out new fall and winter merchandise and Thursday and Friday involve additional merchandise placement and the usual “behind the scenes” labeling, pricing, hanging, etc. There is no advance sign-up – just come to The Closet for as long as you can.

The grand re-opening for Fall/Winter 2014 will be Saturday, September 27. The hours are extended for this special day (9-3 rather than the usual 10-2). The Closet is asking for extra volunteers for the extended hours so the assigned congregations will not be overburdened after their regular shifts. Help is really needed at the end of the day to straighten up so that The Closet’s staff can perform their normal duties on Monday. Just click on the link below to sign up to help 8:45-10 or 2-3:30 on September 27, the date of the Fall 2014 Grand Re-Opening with all new fall/winter clothing.

"Journeys" Art Show - Now through September 14th

You are invited to a Teacher-Student Art Exhibit that will reflect the artistic journeys of 9 artists over 2 to 5 years of working together as a class. Melanie Zucker Stanley is the instructor and the Students/Artists are:  Grazina Cochran, Gwen Cohen, Helen Howells, Julia Malakoff, Marty Matheson, Becky O’Neill, Colleen Rogan, and Marie Wright.  The exhibit will run through September 14.

“Journeys” captures the essence of individual creativity from the artists who worked with the instructor to study a variety of mixed media techniques while weaving their own voices into their work.  Together, the works reflect beautiful color, imagination, design, and bold expression with a vivid diversity among the group.

Caring Circle

The Caring Circle of this Congregation provides support at times of need, such as arranging for food and rides, organizing receptions after a memorial service, and keeping in contact with members and friends of this congregation who are ill or shut in. If you would like the support of the Caring Circle, please feel free to contact our Minister or our Caring Circle co-chairs, Dora Anderson and Linda Johnson.
