Round 18 Review

Reserves march into finals, club stalwart retires, is that a scoreboard I see before me?

The Seniors were unable to overcome the 2nd placed Hampton Rovers on the weekend. The Ressies, however had a great win and secured their spot in the finals. The Unders faced an uphill battle over top placed Ivanhoe.

Roh Kapoor Retires

After a 167 games, club stalwart Roh Kapoor laced up the boots for his final game for Old Camberwell on the weekend.  Rohan first player for the club in 1999 and captained his side to a U19 premiership, whilst also winning the VAFA Section B&F. In 2000 he started playing Seniors. Rohan moved to Perth in 2006 but returned to the club in 2010, winning the Senior's B&F in 2012 and runners up in 2011.

A fierce competitor on the field, Roh is an integral member of the Senior's backline but has been known to sneak a few goals up forward from time to time. Off the field, he was a finalist in the Men’s Health man of the year competition and made the cover of August 2010.

Ben Robertson

Senior Coach Ben Robertson has announced he will not be continuing on as coach in 2015 due to work and family commitments.  The committee would like to thank Robbo for his great service to the club over the past two seasons. His contributions both on and off the field were greatly appreciated by the committee and players, in what were some frustrating periods where the players for selection were decimated by injuries and holidays. Ben was also an excellent developer of our young players and his coaching talent will be sorely missed.

Robbo advised the committee a few weeks ago of his intentions and the committee have already begun interviewing a coach for 2015. We expect to make an announcement in the near future.

Thank you again Robbo, and all the best in the future. You are always welcome to drop in to the Wellers and we hope stay in touch.

Seniors Match Report
With two wins from our last two outings we went into Saturday's match with genuine enthusiasm  and belief and try as we did, our skills cost us dearly. 5 first half goals to Hampton we're the direct result of Old Camberwell skill errors. And in the second half things didn't progress greatly.
In short we were simply outgunned by a more willing and more competent opposition who will go into next weeks finals as flag favourites.
We again have had an inordinate amount of injuries this season and several players who ran out on Saturday were playing extremely sore -  in the end we just couldn't keep up against quality opposition.

As the curtain falls on another season we can't complain about missed opportunities or close calls as we didn't have the required commitment. In football, as in life you only get what you deserve by the effort you put in. Saturday is just the showpiece of that effort and more often than not we came up short.
I believe the club has enough talent to play finals, but talent alone won't get you there, it needs to be complimented with commitment and sustained effort.
Who knows, a change of coach with a different approach may be the impetus for this (along with player buy in)

As my tenure as senior coach comes to an end, I would like to thank all those involved behind the scenes from Duncan Large and his medical staff to Paul Gregor, Joan, Wearly, Steve Derry and the committee. To Michael Ericsson (U19s) and Stuart Hillier (Reserves) who consistently put players forward for senior selection even when their own teams were facing difficulty.

And lastly to Tristan Beranger (Runner) and assistant coaches Tim Cantwell and Anson Brownless whose support and humour often made some frustrating Saturday afternoons somewhat bearable, a sincere thank you.

I look forward to watching the clubs progress and wish everyone in and around the club all the very best for the future.

Reserves Match Report
In a must win game for the Reserves, Old Camberwell started strongly and by quarter time with the help of a 3-4 goal breeze lead Hampton by 5 goals 2 behinds to 1 point. De Sanctis & Jeffers were combining well in the dual Full Forward roles and Matt & Brett Cottrell had both started strongly.

During the second quarter Old Camberwell extended their handy lead to be 8 goals up at the long break being 10 goals 5 behinds to Hampton’s 2 goals 5 behinds. Max Bain Jones continued his good ruck work from the previous week and Needham & McLaughlin took full advantage of the stoppage advantage. Up forward Schipper was active in the key CHF position and De Sanctis finished the first half with 4 goals to his name.

The third quarter was a replica of the first with Old Camberwell extending their lead by another 6 goals and the Defenders again keeping Hampton goal less for a full a quarter. The final break had Old Camberwell 16 goals 8 behinds to Hampton 2 goals 6 behinds. During this quarter Dean, Gorman & in particular Staynor in defence were very prominent and Matt Cottrell continued his overall dominance in the middle and up forward.

The final quarter could have been a fizzle out since Hampton did not have anything to play for and Old Camberwell were safe in the knowledge that a finals spot had all but been secured, however to the credit of the Old Camberwell players they maintained their momentum and finished the game with another 5 goal quarter to Hamptons 5 points. The final score line was Old Camberwell 21 goals 10 behinds to Hampton 2 goals 11 behinds – a comprehensive 113 point win leading into the first week of the finals.

With 4 players returning from the Ones this week, the Ressies should be in good shape to pick one of our best teams for the season in our lead up to the 1st Semi Final against Monash this Sunday at Trevor Barker Reserve.

Under 19 Match Report
Round 18 had finally come around for what had been a tough year for the Unders and it wasn’t going to get an easier than facing off against the top side at home. We started off really well against them kicking the first couple of goals. It was a bit of an arm wrestle and we went in to quarter time with the scores level. From that point on, Old Ivanhoe put the foot down and never looked back. We didn’t chase hard enough, struggled to be accountable, missed our opportunities when we got them and were often second to the footy.

We played some very good passages of football in the second half however every time we kicked a goal, Old Ivanhoe would find a way to reply quickly with a couple more and were just too good!  It was good to see a crowd for sadly our last match of 2014 however many of the players were already discussing what areas they can improve on for the 2015 season.

I would like to thank the following for giving up their time throughout the season, as without these people the side wouldn’t be able to play each week:

- Assistant Coach: Mat Vogel
- Team Manager: Bryan Troy
- Goal Umpire: Justin Urwin
- Trainer: Alex Beveridge
- Boundary Umpire: Andrew Lane

Thanks to everyone else that helped out throughout the year or came down to support the side.

VAFA Sponsors

Over the past few years, the VAFA have done a lot of great work to involve sponsors of the whole association. This has allowed them to freeze the affiliation fees for clubs for many years.  Not only are there special deals from some sponsors for players, supporters and their families, but there are some direct rebates for clubs.

For example if you are looking for a new or used car, and buy one from the Bayford Group, the club gets $500. Such an easy way to support the club with much needed funds. GET YOUR VOUCHER HERE. Please circulate amongst your friends and families.

If you are planning a holiday, please consider Royal Brunei and Mantra Group. Mention you are with the VAFA when booking. Special offers will be included in our newsletters as they become available.
