September is an exciting time for film events! Check out what's on offer this month:
The next DOCommunity screening is Dark Horse, the documentary that inspired this year's feature film of the same name.
New Zealand | 2003 | 70 mins | Dir. Jim Marbrook
Winner of Best Feature film at Documentary Edge Festival in 2005, Dark Horse follows the inspirational Genesis Potini as he takes the game of chess away from the rarefied clubrooms of upper class suburbs and spreads the love of the game amongst young underprivileged kids in a community more typically portrayed in the media for other social issues including domestic violence and crime.
Forming the Eastern Knights Chess Club in his hometown of Gisborne, he travels up to the Big Smoke with his young charges to foot it against Auckland's best in the National Junior Chess Championships.
Along the way he must deal with his own challenging bipolar disorder and keep his life on an even keel. Director Marbrook paints an unaffected portrait of Potini, the guy-next-door turned hero and staunch mental health advocate.
As always, DOCommunity screenings are free of charge and seating is on a first come, first served basis.
