ISTANBUL IGF 2014- "Connecting Continents for Enhanced Multi-stakeholder Internet Governance"

The 9th Annual IGF Meeting held in Istanbul, Turkey from 2nd to 5th September 2014 with the theme for the meeting being "Connecting Continents for Enhanced Multi-stakeholder Internet Governance". This was an awesome experience.  The participants discussed and proposed possible ways forward over the four days period. There were 2,374 onsite participants and 1163 remote participants. There were 215 Africans.

The program highlights include sessions on Net Neutrality organized by NETmundial and a debate on the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) transition stewardship organized to gather inputs from members of Internet governance community, remembering the debate on the ongoing process for replacing the current stewardship arrangement.

For the pre-conference session, the host country had convened a high level meeting, comprising of twenty one high level leaders, to discuss capacity building for economic development.  This session, leading to the NETmundial in Sao Paulo, created a roadmap for institutional improvements to the global Internet governance ecosystem.
There were discussions to clarify any concerns regarding ICANN’s accountability and governance process and the released updated version of the Guidelines for Industry on Child Online Protection, which provides advice on how the ICT industry can work to help ensure children’s safety on the Internet.

We savored the Turkish delights, Home of Ancient Gods, Home of Two Continents, Home of The Silk Road, Home of Troy, Home of Turquoise. The visit to Turkey was fun!

AfPIF-5: African operators commit to interconnect between countries

At the 5th Africa Peering and Interconnection Forum (AfPIF-5)organized by the Internet Society in Dakar, Senegal from 26th to 28th August 2014, African Internet Service Providers Association (AfrISPA), infrastructure providers and Internet Exchange operators committed to interconnect and share more content within the region.
With more than 175 participants at the annual Africa Peering and Interconnection Forum (AfPIF), members sought ways to improve Internet interconnection and traffic exchange in Africa and improve on the quality access of Internet as well as reduce the costs of Internet.
Currently, most African providers have to route their Internet traffic through Europe or North America, even when the traffic is for networks within the continent or within the same country. As an example, for one to access a Senegalese website from The Gambia, the connection will have to go through Europe, which negatively impacts the speed and reliability of the connection.
Even though there have being increase in submarine fibre optic cables and terrestrial backbones connecting cities and towns across Africa, traffic continues to be routed through Europe and North America. The continent’s networks are not directly interconnected.
Despite the challenges, participants believe it is time to interconnect Africa, direct connection between Africans is important for socio-economic development. The future is in peering in an era where cost of transit is declining. Discussions delved into details of how to set up bilateral agreements, how to attract more networks to the Internet Exchange Point and how to measure and analyze traffic coming from the region.
The conference was supported by reputed companies such as Google, AMS-IX, Netnod, Seacom, DE-CIX, AFRINIC, Liquid Telecom, LINX, dot Africa, Akamai, France-IX, ARTP and Orange and benefited from speakers from around the world.
