Dear <<First Name>>,

Renovations Tip of the Month
Helpful Tips for September

With all the WONDERFUL rain we have been getting, the vegetation around our homes and cabins has blossomed this year. The thick green foliage can be awesome to behold or bothersome to contend with. But contend with it we must.

The weeds (some of these things have bark on them at my place) , and wild flowers will shortly become what is known as ladder fuels.  During a fire the ground flames can be conducted into the trees by burning weeds and shrubs. When these turn brown you need to cut them down!

That was the first tip.

The second is for you to tune into the Rosie on the House radio show Saturday morning at 9AM. This is carried locally on 1130 am KQNA.

Rosie and Romey will be covering topics over the next few weeks ranging from how to shut down your pool, to drywall repairs, living with your pets (that could be interesting), and welcoming back our snowbird friends.

Cheers till next month!

An Addition???? Really?........

So, you are contemplating an addition to your home, or cabin. Something just is not functioning well for you and if you only had more space, well, then it would work better.

While conventional thinking would support your logic, we at Renovations might suggest a few tactics that make us all think outside the box, or more directly ‘inside’ the box. That presumes, of course, we are referring to your home or cabin as the box.

Let’s go through a few pre-planning exercises to see if the addition you think you want is really the addition you need.

Start with a pad of paper and pen; you really need to write down the information you are about to generate. Make a bullet point list of the things you want the space(s) to do, or how you want them to function. Next, on another page, make a list of the things your space is not doing. Then finish with a list of the things you believe the addition will fix.

The list could look something like this:

  • Things I want the space to do:
    • Want to be able to have my better half work in the kitchen without bumping into me.
    • Want to have more privacy for my home office.
    • I really like the view from the master bedroom and I want to have a place to have a chair for us to read or just enjoy the view.
  • Things my space is not doing:
    • The bedroom has no space for a chair or two.
    • The kitchen was designed for one skinny person.
    • The den/office is right near the front door and the TV room.

The addition will fix this by:
Moving the wall out will create more space for a couple of chairs and a small end table.
The kitchen will have more space to maneuver.
The den/office can be on the far end of the house.

Now that you have these, really look at the configuration of the spaces in your home. Is there a spare bedroom that the master could take over and not only create more sitting room, but might add some storage as well. How about the kitchen and the adjacent dining room that you hardly ever use?

The point here is to think how your existing space could be reconstructed to meet your space and functional needs. This is the thinking inside the box I referred to earlier.
At Renovations our talents as architects and builders allow us to see solutions others have not even thought to consider. So think inside the box before you decide to spend the time and effort to add on.

You may not have to.
